And the N. Sane Trilogy version of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back on PS4 makes 24.

So far, I'm only at 85%.

Would it be odd that if beat the second game before beating the first?

On a related note, I've just beat Cortex in the N. Sane Trilogy version of the first Crash Bandicoot on PS4. That's 25 now.

Like CB2, I'm at 85% completion.

pierrot wrote: Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:34 pm Ranger X is so friggin' good! It's definitely one of my favorite games on the Genesis. GAU entertainment became Nextech (Crusader of Centy), so they're responsible for a couple of my favorite games on the Genesis. Unfortunately I didn't find Linkle Liver Story on the Saturn to be quite up to par, and after the Saturn they seemed to mostly work on established franchises as a mercenary outfit, but I think their technical abilities still potentially shine through in a lot of those, too.

Totally agree about Ranger X and I'm glad to hear that others appreciate this one! It's really unique for a 16-bit action game and with great graphics and an impressive soundtrack. Hadn't planned on focusing on their games this year, but I also played Crusader of Centy earlier in the year and really enjoyed it. Another highly rated Genesis game for me as well.

What type of issues did you have with Linkle Liver Story? I've heard mixed things about it, so I'm genuinely curious. I feel like GAU/Nextech had a lot of potential, so it's too bad they ended up closing.

Ranger X is great, but is it better than Cybernator?
And those graphics, damn. Not only the pixel art, but the background effects!

141. We Were Here Together (PC)

I hadn't planned to beat any more games this year, but this was too fun a game not to just play all of today. My partner had the idea to play this game together after it was free on the Epic Games Store a week or so ago. Just from the look of it, it looked like a Long Dark-style survival game or something, so I really wasn't interested, but upon hearing it was actually a co-op puzzle game, I was immediately super interested. We wound up having so much fun that we played through the whole thing in one sitting in a little under 5 hours without looking up any puzzle solutions~ (making me write this review tonight before bed to make sure it still got done this year X3)

We Were Here Together is actually the 3rd game in its series, not that we were aware of it. This series is now 5 games long, and they all center around very similar premises to this. Two explorers in the arctic come across a mysterious distress signal and head out to investigate, but as the long and poetic opening cutscene full of kings, curses, and magic imply, this is far more than just some arctic adventure X3. Will you and your buddy be able to get back *together*? The narrative is fairly simple, but it's really cleverly executed beyond just being a good excuse for puzzle solving. The two players are separated very often, and that means the story events you see end up being quite different too. After every big cut scene, my partner and I got to fill each other in on the completely different aspects of the story that we'd both just seen, and it made for a remarkably tense and satisfying narrative conclusion for a puzzle game.

That separation naturally plays into the puzzle design too, and this game ends up having some really solid puzzle design as a result. The actual mechanics are pretty straightforward. Yeah, you can run and jump, but all you actually *need* to do is move, interact with stuff, and communicate with your co-op buddy. Just about all puzzles in the game relate in some way to doing something together, usually regarding missing information for one or both of you. Luckily, the two of you have walkie talkies to chat with each other with, and just like real walkie talkies, you can't hear the other person if you've got the button held down (though you can thankfully see on a little indicator if they're also trying to talk at the moment). Even with just those simple pieces, though, they manage to make some really well-designed puzzles! Not all of them are winners (a couple have one person sitting around bored too much while the other person does kinda everything, and a couple are also so timing-based that they make for very fiddly solutions with any kind of internet latency you'd have to be dealing with), but by and large, they're really good brain teasers. They manage to do a really good job of making figuring out the actual puzzle solution (or even what you're solving in the first place X3) just as fun as figuring out how to communicate all that to your buddy X3. The two halves are honestly SO different that you could easily play through this game with your roles switched and have a great time all over again with just how unique the experience is as you play both halves (something my partner and I are really seriously considering!), and that's not something you can say for most puzzle games!

The aesthetics of the game are very modern 3D indie game. Lots of well made 3D environments that are well put together with a few bits of graphical weirdness here and there. The art style doesn't try to over complicate things, and they do a fine job of having an art style that both has some character to it as well as doesn't get in the way of the puzzle presentation. The audio is also good, with VERY hammy, campy voice acting and some good, mood-setting music for when you're on a time limit and the pressure is really on.

Verdict: Highly Recommended. I'm really happy I got to end this year of gaming with such a bang. It of course helps that my partner is so wonderful (and we both love puzzles), but this is genuinely a really great puzzle game if you've got anyone in your life who likes puzzles too. It's not a very technically demanding game in terms of reflexes or fast movements, so even if someone is only marginally familiar with how to use a modern controller, they should have no serious issue playing along with a more experienced player. The demand to communicate clearly isn't always easy to deal with, and this very well might test your patience from time to time as a result, but if you and a buddy are puzzle lovers and willing to face the challenge together, than this will make for some awesome and memorable weekend fun for the two of you~ ^w^

Games beaten 2025 stats:

Total games beaten: 58

Format
Physical games beaten: 53
Digital games beaten: 5

Handheld games beaten: 42
Console games beaten: 16

Nothing super unexpected here. I actually beat more digital titles than normal! Handheld took the bulk of my completions but it's a bit misleading - I count Switch as handheld, but I played some Switch games on my TV this year too.

Consoles:
Breakdown by console gen:
Gen 3: 0
Gen 4: 8
Gen 5: 1
Gen 6: 1
Gen 7: 0
Gen 8: 39
Gen 9: 9

Games beaten by console:
SNES: 7
Gamecube: 1
Switch: 36
Switch 2: 6
PS1: 1
PS4: 2
PS5: 3
PSVR: 1
Neo Geo: 1

I went into this year with the specific goal to make a dent in my Switch backlog, which I feel like I mostly achieved - over 50% of my games beaten were on Switch. There's still a lot to go, but I'd like to try and get some more variety in next year.

Breakdown by genre:

2D Platformer: 11
3D Platformer: 2
Action Adventure: 4
Adventure: 12
Flight combat: 2
Beat em up/hack & slash: 1
Light gun: 1
Metroidvania: 2
Open world: 1
Party: 3
Puzzle: 1
Racing: 3
RPG: 4
Run n Gun: 1
Shmup: 2
Sports: 1
Strategy: 4

As usual, platformers dominated my genre numbers, with a fairly even smattering of games beaten across other genres. It's a misleading picture though, as the RPGs and Strategy games here probably commanded a much larger proportion of my time over all.

I'm doign something a bit different for my top 10 this year. Almost half of the games I finished this year were remakes, remasters or just straight up revisits of games I've beaten previously. A lot of these a great games though and wouldnt have taken up a lot of my top 10, which feels a bit unfair. So I'm splitting the list into 2 - the top 10 new to me games of the year, and then the top 10 revisited games I played after.

No honourable mentions this time - if I'm honest, it's not the strongest year in terms of games beaten in general. Most games were good, but many of them don't quite feel worthy of their top 10 status and wouldnt have made the list in other years:

AJ's top 10 newly played games of 2025
10. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Whilst I don’t feel like it stands out especially compared to the other offerings on GBA, more Castlevania on GBA is no bad thing, and this was a fun time.

9. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Despite being a finale to the Kiryu saga in Yakuza, it also stands up well as a standalone game. The new engine is great but there’s some compromises on content which feel a little disappointing for a finale. A great entry in a great series nonetheless.

8. Toem
A charming little indie title which has some upbeat vibes. It’s got just enough meat and variety to keep you occupied from start to finish without staying it’s welcome, and some fun writing and a neat aesthetic to help it stand out.

7. Gris
A beautiful game with some fun puzzles and great emotional design. It’s short and sweet, and offers some nice variety to the mechanics as you progress.

6. Split Fiction
The plot is nothing to write home about, but the 2 player co-op design is done fantastically, with characters having different abilities throughout forcing you to co-operate to help each other solve the path forward. Great setpieces too, despite some weird tonal inconsistency.

5. Cruis’n Blast
Pure arcade racing fun distilled – it’s nice to just veg out with a game where the objective is to go fast and win, with nothing much else complicating things. It’s a bit light on content as you might expect from an arcade port, but its funny and charming and super easy to pick up and play.

4. Pokémon Legends: Z-A
It’s flawed in many ways, but there’s no denying the fun of the core formula in Pokemon Legends Z-A – catching, battling and exploring is as fun as ever, and there’s some likeable characters too. It feels like Pokémon company has been allowed just a little more time than normal to deliver this one, and it shows that it pays off.

3. Blue Prince
I put over 50 hours into this puzzle roguelite experience and even then I didn’t finish uncovering all it’s mysteries. The core drafting mechanics help keep repeated runs from getting tiresome, and the macro level puzzles across the house give some amazing lightbulb moments when you figure them out. The final few puzzles perhaps become more tedious than fun – which is why it narrowly missed out on 2nd place in my list - but until then it’s compelling and intriguing throughout.

2. Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 takes everything that works in the Persona franchise and polishes it to a sheen, with loveable characters, compelling exploration and social links, fun combat mechanics and a great story. It manages not to get too tiring despite it’s 100 hour + run time. A must play RPG.

1. Donkey Kong Bananza
Donkey Kong Bananza has a hard task ahead of it – building upon the already amazing Mario Odyssey and making a game that really highlights Donkey Kong as a unique character who stands out from the crowd. The terrain smashing mechanic and the uniquely mobile nature of DK make you feel like a super strong ape and create gameplay mechanics that are compelling and unique. The game feels like a celebration of DK’s history, achieving an impressively tough task in bringing together the quite different aesthetics of Nintendo, Rare and Retro studios DK worlds. I played it to 100% and had an amazing time doing so.

AJ's top 10 remakes, remasters and replays of 2025
10. Super Mario World
It’s not my favourite Mario game, but revisiting Mario World in order to experience all of it’s secrets and clear all exits was a fun experience.

9. Kirby & The Forgotten Land
It’s low on the list mostly because I only recently played the original release, but Kirby & The Forgotten Land on Switch 2 is a nice update in the games performance, and the new DLC is a fun set of bonus content, even if it’s mostly just more Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

8. Advance Wars: Re-Boot Camp
I was worried about the visuals of this game in screenshots, but in motion it works well, and getting 2 amazing strategy games in one package is great. However, there’s not a lot of changes to the originals or much new added, so it’s hard to recommend this over the GBA originals, hence a lower position on the list. No denying the quality of the source material though!

7. Pokémon Colosseum
I haven’t played through the main story of Colosseum since I was a teenager, and whilst it has many flaws – low team diversity, grindy gameplay and long animations to name a few – I just couldn’t help but really enjoy revisiting the game. It holds up in spite of it’s issues.

6. Rocket Knight Adventures
I played through both Sparkster titles this year and thought they were good but not great. I started questioning how good the original was as a result, but on a replay I remembered that Rocket Knight Adventures is fantastic – inventive mechanics, well designed levels, beautiful sprite work and a fair but firm level of challenge make it one of the best games on Mega Drive.

5. Pikmin
I adore Pikmin, and I really enjoyed revisiting the game on Nintendo Switch this year. The first game in the franchise is a perfectly portioned and brilliantly designed game, and it holds up amazingly on revisiting. In fact, the main issues I encountered in this replay were some of the minor changes made by the remake to bomb rock mechanics and the camera. Call it muscle memory or not, I think the Gamecube version still has it’s advantages, hence this only being at number 5.

4. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Unlike with Pikmin, I personally feel this is the best way to play this Gamecube title. The new remake looks fantastic and adds a few fun new bosses too. It’s not a 100% improvement – I find the 30fps to be inconsequential and actually quite fitting for the art style, but some of the timing changes to moves make them less effective than they should be. Either way though, this is a fantastic way to play through a charming, inventive and entertaining RPG.

3. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Yoshi’s Island is a game I remember liking, but I had started to question if it was even that good after playing a bunch of other Yoshi games and finding them either mediocre, or well made but dull. Like Rocket Knight though, replaying this adventure to completion this year reminded me just how great it was – the peak of the franchise from the first entry. Fun level designs, interesting challenges and a surprisingly achievable completion goal despite the amount of collectables, I had a blast revisiting this one.

2. Starwing
Starwing is a game I have enjoyed since I was a kid, but I’d never got around to completing all 3 routes. This year I sat down and completed all 3 routes plus the secret ending, and despite all of it’s technological limitations, I think this game holds up excellently and is my vote for best in the series (sorry N64 fans).

1. Super Metroid
One more SNES replay in my top 3. I never played Super Metroid as a kid, but after first playing in my 20s, I was happy to declare this as the best game on the system. This year I did a 100% item collection run and got the best ending, and my opinion hasn’t changed. Super Metroid is a masterwork of game design and atmosphere that has aged like a fine wine. The best game on the console, probably the best game in the series and definitely my number 1 replay/remake of 2025.

Looking back at all the games I played this year, it was kinda daunting to do a summary of them XD. A big goal of the last chunk of this year was breaking 2021's record of 130 games beaten, and that quickly became the mission of the past few months despite all the long RPGs I'd played earlier in the year X3. I made it in the end with 141 total games beaten, but hot damn do I not expect to ever beat that number

I'm not gonna do a big write up for each one (as the reviews already exist), but I already did top and bottom 10 lists for them, so I thought I'd at least share those here~

Pidge's Bottom 10 Games Played in 2025:
The top ten games I enjoyed the least this year (It was really hard picking an order for these)
10. Shining Force Neo (PS2)

9. in Stars and Time (PC)

8. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (Wii)

7. Grow Up (PS4)

6. Final Fantasy 9 (PS1)

5. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

4. Mega Man: Wily Wars (MD)

3. Dead to Rights (Xbox)

I pulled this from Backloggery because I don't remember it in great detail anymore:
Well, Lalala was one the most unlikeable characters I've seen in a game.

Was overall fairly fun, but there are a few technical and design elements that hold it back a bit. While it's rather graphically appealing, with large sprites, it's a little zoomed in. Also the frame rate seems to be 30fps, and chugs when there are larger 3D models in the frame. The story is simple, but not bad. Music is mostly unmemorable, but not bad. There's a lot of choice with weapons, but I didn't find a need to switch from a sword of each element. Also didn't bother with magic.

I had written a bit about it in an old thread too, but it was mostly the same thing:
Linkle Liver Story is fairly fun, overall, but the screen is a bit zoomed in, and there are actually a fair amount of 3D assets used in the game. The problem is that the frame rate can dip pretty heavily when some of them are on screen. The combat feels a little chintzy sometimes, especially at first. The different types of weapons are largely useless, too. There's really no reason to have anything other than a sword of every element. I don't think it's a bad game, by any means, but I also don't find it to be very memorable in any way--other than how unlikable Lalala (the blonde bunny) is. I think it compares really unfavorably to Rayearth, as well. I would 100% recommend Rayearth--or even other, better, NexTech games like Crusader of Centy or X-Ranger--over Linkle Liver Story.

And those graphics, damn. Not only the pixel art, but the background effects!

For me it's not even close. Ranger X runs away with it in a landslide. I don't particularly like the Assault Suit games, though. Found Leynos 2 and Gun Hazard to both be chore-like games, too.
