That would imply it's an upgrade though when it's not. It's a budget device. The SP stood for special. I think some people might find it a little insulting if you used that term for a purposely downgraded version.

Well, the most common failure point on the DS Lite (at least) is the hinges/related. It does look like the thing has protective layer of some kind on the top screen to boot. If nothing else, it does seem like it'd be harder to break.
Yeah that seems to be the whole point of it, to endure more child-based abuse than the normal models.

The regular 3DS and XL models have a 'protective' layer over the display as well. But it's practically the most easily scratched, flimsy piece of plastic I've ever seen. If the 2DS uses the same plastic then these kid's might have a tough time seeing what's on the screen after a while.

We all seemed to survive before handhelds were clamshells, though to be fair a lot of old Game Boys are scratched to hell.

We all seem to get along fine with smart phones and tablets (which a lot of kids have these days).

If it uses Gorilla glass or an equivalent hard screen, I'd be shocked.

Yea, the only reason my smart phone and tablet are fine are because they use very nice glass.

For the longest time I thought the Vita used Gorilla glass too. It's pretty scratch resistant and feels pretty good like glass touch screens typically do. Turns out it actually supposedly uses a very tough plastic. Not as tough as Gorilla glass, but I haven't really had any issues.

In any case I guess Nintendo decided between scratched screens and broken in half handhelds and they went with scratched screens.

They might still be pretty tough though, it's hard to say until someone gets their hands on one and tells us.

"2DS" is really dumb.

I agree that there will be confusion about finding "2DS games." I also think if parents are gonna plop down $130 for this, they may as well plop down the extra $20-$40 (depending on sales) and get a full featured system. Even if I were a kid, I'd probably not be thrilled to get the "cheap" version of the system that I want. Unless the thing is ultra durable/scratch resistant, I can't see it being a good alternative for parents to buy.
This I could see as a possible alternative but the other ones are silly. XD

Silly? Sure.

Better than "2DS"? Yup.

I rarely use my 3D but I don't understand why it doesn't fold LOL. Made sense with the GB micro bc it considerably smaller.

It is a good price but an odd design

Unboxing....

Seems even more apparent that the button placement seems really weird to me.
