I played the Sega CD version first, but found the PS1 version to be a better experience. The original was released early in the Sega CD's lifespan in Japan and it doesn't really take full advantage of the CD format (there's maybe 10 minutes of spoken dialog and a couple minutes of very rough animation). The Playstation version has much smoother graphics, as well as an expanded storyline, numerous fully animated videos, and is generally more aesthetically interesting.
If you're really curious about the original experience, get the Sega CD version, but don't expect too much in terms of anime cut scenes or anything. And either version is going to be expensive! It's still a great RPG and you'll probably want Eternal Blue and the PS1 versions after you've played it! (I've yet to get the Eternal Blue PS1 remake, but IT'LL HAPPEN.)
The GBA and PSP versions were not translated by Working Designs and I therefore assume that they are not nearly as much fun as the Sega CD/PS1 versions. Working Designs tended to add a lot of localization flair in their releases rather than strict literal translations. I think that makes it fun but, some folks might not appreciate their added humor.

I prefer the PlayStation versions. Seeing that I don't have the segacd version.
I don't have it on GBA either.
But theres also the psp version to deal with now.
Decisions decisions

The Sega CD version has random encounters versus walking into the enemy on PSX for the battle to start.
Also, saving in more stable on a PSX. The Sega CD save is battery based. I recommend getting the Sega backup RAM cart (slides into Genny slot & acts like a memory card) if you're going to be investing hours into the SCD RPGs. Would suck to lose your save!

Dunno.
I played the PSP version, and it was translated by XSEED. They made a good job of it! It also has widescreen presentation, good voice acting, music played on real guitars, and redrawn sprites. It's definitely the prettiest version. I'd recommend it. Some people complained about the loading times, but I didn't mind them at all. I thought it was a great port. That said, I didn't like the game itself.

Psp port random encounter based like Sega CD original or you can see your enemies first like PSX port?Valkyrie-Favor wrote:Dunno.

I'm a fan of random battles but this seems to be the trend on remakes. I hear Dragon Quest VII remake will not have random encounters

For the first Lunar, from what I read across fansites, the GBA version is the one that you may want to avoid - IF you can't afford the Sega or PSX version, then go with the PSP version.
Otherwise, with my own experience, I had no issues with the PSP version.

waiting for a copy of the GBA game to come in the mail that I snagged for a few dollars on a certain notorious internet auction site.
Reviews for it are fair to good when not compared to the console versions, so I am going to give it a go at some point don't know when though.
One of my goals is to get both the SegaCD and PS1 versions and play them soon.
