66. Doom 3: The Lost Mission (FPS)(PC)

On the last day of the year, I managed to complete my Nightmare difficulty run of Doom 3's expansion, The Lost Mission. The Lost Mission was released as part of the Doom 3: BFG Edition, which was an updated version of Doom 3 meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Doom. It's a strange bird due to some adjustments and fixes it makes in all of the base games, but The Lost Mission itself is a nice little treat. Why? Because it's made up entirely of cut content, levels that didn't make it into Doom 3. Instead, they were stitched together and given their own story so we could finally check out this content.

If you enjoy Doom 3 and its Resurrection of Evil, The Lost Mission doesn't really give you anything new to play with. It's all the weapons from the previous titles with little to update. Playing on Nightmare does make things interesting, particularly at the start: Doom 3's Nightmare difficulty has your health slowly drain to 25 points, at which point most individual hits will kill you even with full armor. The name of the game is not to get hit. In the beginning, this is a nailbiting experience as you are severely ill-equipped to deal with most foes. Eventually this changes, and by the time you're in Hell, you're ripping foes apart with bullets, plasma, explosives, and so on. They're still threats, mind, just less than they used to be.

This is making me appreciate going back to Doom 3. Since it's pretty much the red-headed stepchild of the series at this point, it's a good way to get me to revisit. And The Lost Mission brought me appreciation for the means of destruction and the methods and strategies I must develop to surpass Doom 3's enemy design.

My turn!

I’ll list the six best games I beat this year…and the five worst.

Six Best games of 2025
1. Hollow Knight Silksong (Switch) - The best metroidvania ever pushed my action-platforming skills to their limits

2. Dark Souls Remastered (Xbox) - A classic FromSoftware ARPG even more engrossing and better-designed than I anticipated

3. F-Zero X (N64) - Unbelievably fast and challenging racing game that has aged wonderfully and, perhaps, may never have been surpassed in the nearly 30 years since its release

4. Jet Grind Radio (DC) - Just a super-cool, genre-bending DC game with an amazing soundtrack and that I should have played years ago

5. Shadow Tower Abyss (PS2) - FromSoftware’s final first-person ARPG isn’t its best, but it’s still a pretty amazing experience

6. BurgerTime Deluxe - A stellar GB game that somehow captures both everything great about BurgerTime games and chibi GB titles

Five Worst Games of 2025
32. Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad (Neo Geo) - A low- to mid-tier overhead run ‘n gun that suffers immensely in comparison to its predecessor.

33. Mega Man (DOS) - A critically reviled game in a beloved action-platformer series that isn’t as bad as its reputation, but isn’t very good either.

34. Super BurgerTime (Arcade) - An exceptionally annoying entry in a great series that jettisons everything that made its predecessors great.

35. The Flintstones - BurgerTime in Bedrock (GBC) - Yabba-Dabbba…don’t play this sluggish game that is so much worse than BurgerTime Deluxe

36. The Bounty Huntress (Switch) - A boring metroidvania that makes 3-4 hours feel like 100

And the N. Sane Trilogy version of Crash Bandicoot: Warped for PS4, albeit at 47% completion, makes 26.

With only 134 minutes left in 2025, I don't see a 27th happening. Proper and NOT premature definitive countdown tomorrow evening at the earliest.

I actually beat a few things this year, although the last few months I've mostly just been slowly chipping away at Alliance Alive HD, and clearing out innumerable quests and objectives in Dragon Quest X while playing through the ver 3 story.

I'll give Roger Ebert ratings (everything's computer, unless otherwise specified):
  1. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse - bq
  2. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse - bq
  3. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. [Replay] - bd
  4. Samurai Spirits Zero - bq
  5. Eiyuden: Story Expansion - Marisa Chapter (DLC) - bq (borderline pq)
  6. Eiyuden: Story Expansion - Marcus Chapter (DLC) - bq (borderline pq)
  7. Inside - bd
  8. Shenmue II [Replay] - bd
  9. Ys Origin - bd
  10. Ys I Chronicles [Semi-replay] - bq
  11. Ys II Chronicles [Semi-replay] - bq
  12. Fighters Megamix (Saturn) - bq
  13. Ys: The Oath in Felghana - bd
  14. Dragon Quest VII: Eden no Senshi-tachi (PS1) - bd (borderline bq)
  15. DQX Ver2: Nemureru Yusha to Michibiki no Meiyu - bd
  16. Streets of Rage 4 - bq
  17. DQX Ver3: Inishie no Ryu no Denshou - bq (almost bd, but started backsliding into FFXIV territory by the end)

I didn't outright hate anything I played this year, which is kind of new and different.

80. Link's Crossbow Training - Wii
81. Dead Space Extraction - Wii

Managed to squeak in one game before the end of the year, and it's the last of my Wii light gun games. I picked up Dead Space Extraction mostly because I wanted another Wii light gun game; I haven't played the main Dead Space series. And it actually does manage to hit that sweet spot between Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles. It does have a bit of jank of its own, but that doesn't detract.

Dead Space Extraction is a prequel to Dead Space, and the ending is right as Dead Space begins. It tells the tale of how an outer space colony discovers a mysterious artifact that drives people insane and spawns monsters. The game follows a handful of survivors who try to escape.

The game is divided into ten levels of varying lengths (which is a complaint; some levels are too long). It plays out a bit more like an FPS; your inventory carries over from stage to stage exactly. You can carry four weapons at a time, one is your infinite ammo backup gun and the other three are snagged through the stages. You can find new guns in different stages, and once you're full up you have to swap. And you can't swap in between stages, so you'll want to have a good spread of weapon roles. As you move through stages doing light gun stuff you can collect weapon upgrades and lore items. Your performance in a stage will give you points that will upgrade your passive stats as you hit milestones.

Dead Space was notable for its dismemberment system, and that has been carried into this game. If you blow off an enemy's leg they fall over and come to a crawl. This ends up making the game significantly easier than the RE light gun games, as you can keep most enemies at arm's reach. You also get the ability to temporarily slow an enemy to a crawl, with charges that recharge over time. This is useful for particularly fast enemies.

All the weapons have a secondary fire, and this is a bit of jank in the game. To use secondary fire you have to hold your Wiimote or Zapper gangsta style. And it's not a toggle; you only fire secondary when holding the thing sideways. This is very awkward, but fortunately most of the secondary fires aren't worth dealing with anyway. The game also has some lighting issues at times, specifically there are the occasional segments with ranged enemies who are deep in the background, and you can barely see them. Fortunately, you can reflect projectiles and your reticle turns red when over something you can shoot or interact with. The two bosses are also really blah fights.

Overall, this is the strongest of the three light gun games I've played this year (I'm not putting Crossbow Training in the running, since it's a pack-in demo) from a mechanical perspective. I still like Umbrella Chronicles the best for what it adds to the RE lore, which I have a connection to, whereas this game is for a universe I have no experience with, and what I saw doesn't make me think it actually adds any revelations or anything.

Wrap up time!

This year I managed to do 81 games, which is the best I've done in several years. At this point, I think it's pretty clear my overall game completion rate is going to come down to what is coming out and what interests me in the backlog. Some years have more short games come out and some years I might decide to blow through some shorter games I've had for years.

Platform Breakdown

Dreamcast - 5
Gamecube - 1
PC - 34
PS3 - 2
PS5 - 4
SNES - 1
Switch - 26
Switch 2 - 4
Wii - 4

My standard PC and Switch focus. I expect over the next few years that the Switch numbers will move to Switch 2 numbers, as indie games start coming out for the Switch 2. Yes, I could play Switch downloadable games on the Switch 2, but that's not how I roll. If they built the game for the Switch I'll run it on the Switch.

Genre Breakdown

4X - 1
Action - 1
Action Adventure - 4
City Builder - 1
Edutainment - 1
Fighting - 4
FPS - 14
Metroidvania - 17
Platformer - 4
Puzzle - 2
Racing - 1
Rail Shooter - 5
RPG - 12
RTS - 1
Shmup - 1
Simulation - 4
Sports - 1
SRPG - 1
Survival - 1
Survival Horror - 5

This was the year of Metroidvanias for me. I went pretty hard looking for Metroidvanias I hadn't played yet, which I suspect also helped with my completion rate, as Metroidvanias tend to be on the shorter end compared to other games I play.

Re: Games Beaten 2025

Great to read some end of year wrap ups! For 2025, I was able to finish more games than I did in 2024 by a good margin. I also played through a lot of great games, more than I have in the last few years. For this reason, I'm going to do a top 10, instead of a top 5.

One of my goals this year was to make a dent in my list of unfinished Genesis games, and I think I did a decent job with it. It's a trend I'm hoping to continue into 2026. I enjoyed most of the games I played this year, so it was difficult to sort through my top list. Here's to another great year of gaming in the books!

Honorable Mention: Ranger X (GEN)

10. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (PS1) - I didn't have much experience with the stealth genre, so this title gave me a new appreciation for it. While a bit difficult in stretches, I thought that it was fair overall, and a fun ride all the way through.

9. Castlevania: Bloodlines (GEN) - As an action platformer, this title just has the total package, and I'm glad we got a unique Castlevania title on the Genesis. The graphics and music are top notch for the console, and the fact that we got two playable characters with different styles is great as well.

8. Crusader of Centy (GEN) - A very fun and light hearted action adventure game and a total show piece for the Genesis. The concept of having animal buddies that unlock a special ability, depending on who is by your side at the time is a unique take on the genre. Some very impressive graphics for the console and great boss designs too.

7. Phantasy Star (SMS) - As someone who was introduced to the series with PS IV and PSO, it was great to finally experience where the series started, and I totally understand why gamers were drawn to this upon its release. I was really impressed with this one, and I'm sure I would have also been mindblown seeing it in the late '80s.

6. Koudelka (PS1) - Very unique mix of Resident Evil style gameplay with RPG elements, such as experience points, items, and a turn-based battle system on a grid. On paper, it doesn't sound like it would work well, but I think it mostly comes together. Some of the pre-rendered backdrops are stunning. Also, a fantastic soundtrack here as well.

5. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PS1) - I'd been curious about the RPGs that Game Arts released and I was glad to finally play through this one! Another light hearted adventure accompanied by amazing sprite work, a fun battle system, and an enjoyable cast. The amazing packaging for the PS1 release is another nice touch.

4. Final Fantasy III (SNES) - Truly an epic RPG with a great storyline, some cool Mode 7 effects, a memorable cast of characters and one of the most infamous villains in gaming. I had started this one up a few times over the years but never finished it. Glad to say I finally have! I poured a lot of hours into this one taking on all the side quests as well. So good!

3. Silent Hill (PS1) - Growing up, I was a huge Resident Evil fan, and unfortunately never stumbled into the mysterious town of Silent Hill. This game doesn't have much in the jump scares department, but it has a twisted, dark, and creepy atmosphere, and lives up to its reputation as being one of the scariest survival horror games. Even after finishing it, it's one that I still think about a lot. I am not the same after exploring Silent Hill!

2. Super Metroid (SNES) - This is another bonafide classic that I first experienced around release but never finished. I somehow got stuck during my first two attempts to beat this game, so I'm really glad to have finally beat it! One of the best games on the console for sure, as this is the total package. The atmosphere is just amazing.

1. Suikoden (PS1) - I ended up liking this game way more than I expected when I first jumped into it. For me, it was a mixture of the dramatic storyline, the fast paced combat, straight forward mechanics, and the art style. I think the decision to stick with 2D graphics really helped this game age well. Suikoden really got its hooks into me and I had a tough time putting it down. Can't wait to play the sequel in 2026.

I have Doom 3 from GOG, but trying to figure out which version to play: the original or the BFG?

The BFG edition makes tweaks and changes. If you are just thinking of playing Doom 3 and its expansions, then yes, I'd say do BFG edition. The big fix is that your flashlight is now shoulder mounted, instead of something you have to swap to. There is also more lighting and more pickups for better survivability (unless you play in Nightmare, of course). The BFG Edition also contains Doom and Doom 2, but they have also been modified and so aren't as vital to check out. If you want those, I recommend the Doom + Doom II bundle now on Steam and GOG.

Post by elricorico »

I didn't post all year, but I read this thread and a couple of others daily. My count of games finishes was on the low end, but there were some great ones in there:

1 Final Fantasy II Pixel Remaster
2 Marble Saga Kororinpa
3 Astro's Playroom
4 AstroBot
5 Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
6 Trials of Mana
7 Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster
8 Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
9 Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur was my favourite for the year, and likely a top-ten game all-time for me. AstroBot was pretty great as well, making my first several months with the PS5 pretty memorable.

Happy New Year to the Racketboy crowd!
