Sure, it is a tower defense game at heart (before these blew up in the mobile market) but it adds light RPG elements and take a good bit of real time strategy to beat the later levels. The 16 bit look is also appealing to me. Developed by 5th Cell who went on to make Scribblenauts.
Totally sold me on Lock's Quest. They had it at my local resale shop for 4 bucks, so I picked that bad boy right on up on my time out today
Enjoy! Fun game. The later levels are tough. I finally beat the last run at 2 or 3 am on a week night when I had to be at work at 8a. That's when you're into it. Humming the battle song now...
Just looked up the 3DS Transformers title I referenced, Rise of the Dark Spark. Holy crap, it's developed by WayForward. Interesting...

I think it really does boil down to how different TO and OB are. Most people are just going to prefer one or the other.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I am so distraught that the MUSIC/ON code doesn't seem to work in Tactics Ogre. I hope I don't end up having to follow suit.

Dark Wizard (Sega CD) has always been the strategy game for me - once you get the mechanics figured out it is pretty amazing. I even made maps on excel for the battlefields:

Some of my other favorites:
Iron Storm (Saturn)
Third World War (Sega CD)
Nectaris (PS1)
Vandal Hearts I (PS1)
Vandal Hearts II (PS1) (would have been amazing except for a really flawed battle system)
Shining Force CD (Sega CD) - includes an amazing museum battle featuring most of the bosses
Brigandine (PS1)
Master of Monsters (Genesis)
Rebelstar Tactical Command (GBA) is worth a look - although it doesn't hold up well under repeated plays.

Styx Beer is a third more toxic than any other regular beer. The worst beer - the filthiest beer - the deadliest beer. It's Styx Beer!"

Yes and yes. This game rules. Super hard, though.

This is one of those threads where I look back and realize that I already said my piece like 2 years ago.

Re: What's the best strategy game you've played?
So many i can't really recall now, i've liked mostly every strategy game as it was my first genre.
My first favorite was Dune 2: The Battle for Arrakis on Sega Mega Drive 2
On a PC: All the Warcrafts, Stronghold: Crusader, Rise of Nations, Command and Conquer series
Uff the only ones i could remember on spot, maybe these are the ones after all then
Edit: uff, Warhammer series, Heroes if they count (i remembered after looking through the topic)

Re: What's the best strategy game you've played?
People often forget about Myth, which was, admittedly, a bit more of a tactical game than a strategy one. But I think it carries some of the same appeal. Myth is one of Bungie's forgotten gems.
