Smartboy - Play Gameboy Carts on Andoid & iphone

Post by Jagosaurus »

Not sure how I missed this. I know Hyperkin teased this in 2016 on April Fools Day. Looks like it is actually coming to fruition. It is currently classified as a development kit, and they are looking for community dev support.

WE built the Smartboy. YOU can make it great.
The Smartboy Development Kit attaches to Android smartphones - turning the phone into a handheld gaming device. It will be compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. Included in the kit is an open source serial app and firmware, which will enable developers of all kinds to advance Hyperkin's current build toward a retail-ready model.
Hyperkin is offering a royalty percentage - of retail-ready Smartboy units sold - to anyone that can improve the Smartboy's serial app and firmware.

I'd personally be more interested in this as a controller only, running ROMs, to be honest (if possible). From the video, it looks like it does not allow you to dump ROMs to your phone but actually reads the cart (or at least checks for the cart & temporarily dumps?).

I kinda want one, the only thing is supposedly it only works with Samsung phones for now from what I saw somewhere. I'd definitely consider getting one eventually maybe...
