Best Dynasty Warriors on PS2?
Ive never played these but will be picking up Hyrule Warriors on 3DS when it comes out. Looking to try out the series first on PS2, which should I play?
I see there were quite a few released on PS2! I'd be open to the spin offs such as Samurai Warriors as well.
Which game is the best gameplay wise & also graphically on PS2 (assuming they're not the same pick)?

It's like playing Madden: Play one and you've played them all.
Seriously, I've played two or three Dynasty Wars as well as Samurai Warriors on Wii. The only difference is which historical figures you run into. Even that doesn't make much difference as they're not super strict regarding historical accuracy anyway. In some games you meet Chinese historical figures from different centuries.
I recommend the eeny-meeny-miney-moe method. You are guaranteed to pick the best Dynasty Warriors game this way.
By the way, I'm not exactly slamming Dynasty Warriors. It's an epic game, and there's a good reason they sell so many copies: It's big sloppy fun!

Ignore above post...
Probably DW 5. DW 3 was great too, but DW 5 was a little more refined.
DW 2 is skippable (DW 3 made it irrelevant), and DW 4 had an annoying duel system that no one liked.
So, I'd say DW 3 or 5. If you want a challenge, get DW 3. It's pretty insane in some parts, especially on higher difficulties

Okay, there are three versions of DW5

Did you play DW6 on PS2?

Okay, there are three versions of DW5standard, Extreme, & Empire. Which one should I tackle?

Oh geez, that's right. I only played the standard one
I haven't played DW6, but it seemed to have gotten a lot of hate from a lot of DW fans. In fact, it felt like the series went through a bit of a dark period there until DW 8, which is pretty good from what I played of it and seemed well received by fans.

And I didn't mean to knock samsonlonghair's post like I did, but I don't like when people just make generalizations like that. Sure, there are similarities between each DW game, but they each have their particular nuances that fans take note of.

Play DW5. Xtreme Legends is an expansion that requires the original game. Empires is a strategy spinoff.
Re: Best Dynasty Warriors on PS2?
Any DW before 3 should be avoided at all cost - 1st was an ok fighting game on PS one, the 2nd defined the series as a hack'n'slash game (thou in Asia, it was to reboot to "Shin" - true), but had many shortcomings.
3 introduced the unique weapons to collect under harder mode, and collecting stat items
4 redo the weapon collection into weapon dev. progress and duel mode (both really pointless)
5 went back to 3, but added weapon weight - again pointless!
PS3 era
6 was almost a redo - fewer characters to play, and the character designs!!!
but the greatest crime was the renbu system, as it did alienate fans.
7 went back to the roots, and introduce the weapon switch
8 follows 7 with improvements - this is the one, IMO, you should play (on PS4 with the both included)
Thou I will continue to stress this, DW is not the way to learn the history of Three Kingdoms, only with RTK you get a better understanding.

Okay looks like I'm buying DW5 to test out the series! Appreciate the advice.
