Picking Up a PS3 (likely) - Questions

Post by Jagosaurus »

I've actually played quite a bit on the ps3 but never personally owned one. I just moved into a new house & may purchase one as a house warming gift to myself lol. Questions:

- I get internet next week here. If I buy the console today with no data connection.... can I boot the system & play most games without patches/ updates?

- Wal Mart has the 12GB super slim for $199 new. Know of any other better deals?

- 12GB... I won't be DLing many titles from PSN. Will this be plenty for updates & patches? I can always add an external HDD if needed correct?

1) No, and the games that need patches to the console also have them on the disk, though that means you might have to patch the console none the less (just without needing to connect to the internet).

3) It's nowhere near enough for anything. Yes you can buy a replacement harddrive, but imo just get a good bundle with games you like. In case you end up buying the 12GB model here's a helpful video

P.S Get PS+

Just to echo what ZeroAX said, 12gb isn't enough for anything on the PS3. Many games have mandatory installs of several gb, nevermind the huge number of patches most games require.

If you get that 12gb however, you can easily upgrade it with any 2.5" laptop hard drive. You can buy a sled off eBay or just use a bit of cardboard to prop it up in the super-slim's bay as I understand it.

Yeah, I bought a 12 GB super slim, and got the HDD and tray separately. Since the 12 GB is flash memory, you don't have to worry about formatting or anything. Just stick it in, and the system will automatically recognize it.

The 250 GB is $300. (I think?) For the 100 bucks I saved, I got a 750 GB HDD and installed it myself.

It would be cheaper to get a 12GB PS3 and put your own harddrive in ... if it didn't require a special cage that didn't come with the HDD-less version. So, throwing down for a bundle makes a bit more sense. You can get an unofficial bracket for $6 or so. The HDD, for 500GB is at least $50. That means you'd be paying $256, when the game bundled versions are $270 or so. I don't know if saving $14 and not getting a game are worth it. Not to mention, who knows if the unofficial bracket seats the HDD improperly. The official brackets, just to note, are not cheap. It's a Harddrive bundle, I believe around $70, I want to say.

You do not have to update the PS3 or games to play them. It just won't allow you to log into PSN ... which doesn't matter if you don't have a net connection. They might require installation off the disc, though.

I didn't know that you need a special tray in the later models. On my PS3 fat I just installed it right away. I was so proud of myself too, since the biggest PS3 HD at the time was the 80Gb mine came with and I installed a 500Gb one 8)

I was planning to turn it into a media center, only to become to lazy to copy all my TV shows and films into its hard drive...the fact that the PS3 never supported .mkv didn't help.

Even after installing all my games and a bunch of PSN stuff and demos and many TV shows, it's still half full at best.

I should have internet here next week (ATT working on the grid @ street level, cables already ran to my house). I just hated to be all excited, get home, open it & there be a forced day 1 update (a la WiiU).

You know... the 500GB bundles aren't looking bad now after reading this. 40x's + more storage & a game. Lego Hobbit or Last of Us....

Is that a joke or a serious question? . Imo if you can find one, get the GTA V bundle. You will have hours and hours of play with that game :)
