What RPGs are closest to delivering a table top RPG?

Post by Violent By Design »

Me and my friends are starting up a Pathfinder D&D game, and it seems like a really fun game.

I know no video games are really like D&D, but I'm sure there are some that capture the elements right. What games are closest to giving you that classic D&D feel? Good games that is, don't wanna play some boring shit.

I have read that Crimson Shroud (3DS) is good - it was developed by Level 5 - but I have not played it:

Temple of Elemenal Evil and Shadowrun Returns comes to mind. Obviously Shadowrun isnt D&D.

There are a bunch of gamers who run living servers for DM Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 games. Not sure how prevelant it still is, but I imagine some are still active.

DMed NWN nights is the best you can get.

And I see Jmustang stated it as I was typing it.

No single player games are comparable to a real RPG.

MMORPGS do count, but you'll be playing as someone completely weak and unimportant. Your role in the story is so small that it isn't worth bothering if you're really interested in role-playing.

You really need a smaller group of players, led by a dungeon master, to have the kind of experience you're looking for. Whether a computer is involved is secondary, and Pathfinder is a good place to start.

My father-in-law sees me playing Fire Emblem Awakening & watches for a bit. He then tells me to look up the board game Stratego ... I'll have to admit they're similar. Now I want that board game lol.

Know it's a strategy game not a table top RPG but relevant to topic :)

My aunt bought me that board game, but I never opened it. I hope one day I can find it.

I'd recommend The Yawhg, it's available on Steam:

It uses 2D cartoon graphics so it should be playable on any basic computer with a modern OS. To me it captures the feel of a table top RPG quite well, since the story is somewhat randomized each time. It's basically like the AI of the game is the dungeon master. You take turns deciding what to do each week and then certain events unfold depending on what you did but the specifics are randomized or based upon your characters stats. You can also play it with up to 4 people, with each of them taking a turn to decide their actions for the day.

Folks mentioning The Temple Of Elemental Evil and Crimson Shroud are on the money. Crimson Shroud even uses virtual die.

The absolute best you can find though that meet your description:
