What were the most underrated Saturn fighters?

Post by Ben »

I thought I'd bring this up after just replaying some of my old fighters for another thread since people are always recommending the Capcom or SNK ones.

Here are my top 5.
1. Astra Superstars - This one had fantastic animation with the 4 meg cart, and really complex mechanics. Not to mention memorable characters (everything from a stick figure to a vampire to a girl in a Santa outfit). Sunsoft made a ton of really underrated games, and this one is no exception.

2. Groove on Fight: Wacky cartoon inspired characters, one of the best soundtracks of any fighting game, great sprites/animation, and fantastic mechanics. What's not to like?

3. Pretty Fighter X - This one gets written off for the fan service aspect, which I don't deny is ridiculous. If you look closer though, it's a great tech demo for what the Saturn could do in terms of animation and had a surprising amount of depth and a steep learning curve, definitely not a button masher.

4. Sonic Council - One of the strangest fighters on the Saturn, the mechanics leave a bit to be desired and it can be mashed through, but it has some of the best sprites and animation on the console.

5. Asuka 120% Burning Fest Ltd. - Another girl fighting game, this one isn't quite as impressive in terms of graphics but sports Guilty Gear style (and quality) mechanics.

Of course I didn't mention any of the 3D ones, but I love 2D, sprite based games. I'd be curious to know what some other picks people have are.

Dark Legend (Suiko Enbu) is an interesting one.

Last Bronx is one of my favorite 3D fighters through nostalgia glasses... played the cabinet @ a local pizza parlor back in the day. You can beat it on the SS, first play through in about 30 mins.

Last Bronx is seriously underrated. It came out about the same time as Soul Edge, and since it wasn't as graphically flashy (no transparencies all over the place) it got overlooked, despite, in my opinion, actually playing just as well, if not better than Soul Edge.

I've been meaning to try Sonic Council, D-Xhird and Anarchy in the Nippon. Anyone have an opinion on the latter two?

I really liked Groove on Fight, but other underrated ones might be Fighters Megamix and probably Fighting Vipers. That game gets no mention at all.

Anarchy in the Nippon is quite good. I think it's made by a team of people who worked on Virtua Fighter. It feels like VF for sure. I like it and you can get it for cheap.

D-Xhird is from the guys who did Toh Shin Den, so if you liked that you might get a kick.

Not exactly. Toshinden was reprogrammed for the Saturn by NexTech (Crusader of Centy, Linkle Liver Story, Cyber Speedway, RE: Code Veronica, etc) who also reworked the original for the Saturn sequel. D-Xhird was developed by that same NexTech.

This this a thousand times this. One of the best lesser known fighters on the system.

This is a very hard topic to really get down into because the system is known for it's fighters. I am gonna cast my vote for Cyberbots though. That game rocked.

Right, that's why I said probably. It's more obscure than underrated, but I wouldn't consider it terrible. I think such titles are worth mentioning, though, because some people will underrate them just because they're not "popular".

The only neat-looking unmentioned Saturn fighter I know of is Rabbit.

Unless those Technosoft mech games count.

Hm.
