1994 Road Rash - Best Port?

I had the PSX version as a kid and loved it. Heard the 3DO is the best. No idea about the Saturn version, and supposedly there's a PC version too!

I want to reacquire the game but don't have a 3DO, only PSX and Saturn. Don't feel like buying a 3DO unless I come across one super cheap. Which version would you guys recommend and why?

I believe the 90s rock soundtrack plays during gameplay on the 3DO port. I own the Saturn port and it runs smooth but 95% sure the rock music only plays on the menus.

I also own the Genesis port. Possibly the best 16 bit soundtrack.

A few podcast back the John & Dave interview one of the road rash creators. You'd probably find it interesting. One of my favorite RB podcast so far!

The Genesis game is the original and has its own charm.

The 32-bit versions are a different game despite having the same name. The best port of that game is a tie between the 3DO and PC version in my opinion which are pretty close to the same thing.

The PlayStation version isn't too far off the other ports really.

Its worth mentioning the Sega CD version is a weird mix between 16 & 32 bit ports.

the psx port only has the soundgarden etc. during the menus, that's awesome that the 3DO version has it during gameplay. IIRC the music is the same for every track in the psx version.

How would I go about playing the PC version these days on a Win7 system? Is it a Dosbox affair? Or something more involved?

It's a Windows game so DOS Box won't help you unfortunately. I haven't tried to run it on any Windows 7 or other 64 bit computer so I'm not sure how the compatibility is. I do remember running it on Vista though. You might be able to run it on a virtual machine using VMware or something if all else fails.

I'd test it out but I don't have the disk on me anymore.

Ahhh dude, looks like the gods really want me to buy a 3DO.

Last thing. I could really check this myself tonight when I get home, but does anyone know off the top of their head whether the PSX or Saturn version allows you to turn off the gameplay music but leave on the sound effects? That way I can just blast my own music but keep the sounds of kicking and punching.

Are there any other differences other than those mentioned above that make the 3DO/PC ports the best?

There are several guides to getting it to work on 7 32bit. It apparently does not like 64 bit oses. Well thats why we have older pcs and/or sandboxes.

^Cheers. I'll see what I can do, but will probably just get the PSX or Saturn version whilst semi keeping an eye out for a cheap 3DO.
