Model 2 Saturns, MK-80000A Vs. MK-80001

Post by Mad_Hatter »

I am about to buy a Sega Saturn very soon. Should I worry about if it is MK-80000A or MK-80001? Or should I buy whatever is cheapest?

Of all the various saturns I have, I see no difference other than oval or circle buttons.

They all seem to work fine for me.

I dont open mine up, but there are some hardware revisions to them.

Supposedly some are easier to mod chip than others.

So I guess it really boils down to "which saturn console is easiest to hack?"

I havent modded mine, but I should. :?:

Oval button ones have an access light and are generally harder to put a mod chip in. Some have a button to help clear memory if a dead battery sits in one too long. But maybe the buttonless ones are less likely to have the save memory corrupt when underpowered. I'm not really aware of any important differences myself.

I know the difference between the model 2 and model 1. But I was talking about the difference between the 2 model 2 revisions. The difference between MK-80000A or MK-80001? Both are considered model 2 except they are a different version.

I was curious to know if there is a significant advantage over the other, or if i should just get what is cheaper?

If you're not putting in a mod chip, no difference. Doesn't seem to be like the Genesis where diff variations can vary greatly in vid & sound output.

I've never seen a model 2 that is MK-80001. Do you have a picture of it?

The outside is exactly the same. The only difference is the "internal jumper locations" and was manufactured from 7/96 – 98. Via wikipedia.

Then that's just a MK-80000A.

MK-80001 is the model number of the box for the model 1 MK-80000 console.
