Hey guys, I've been working on my Amazon wish list so I have a guide of things I want to get. I am interested in a wide variety of topics, but I'm highly interested in refresher material for academic subjects I haven't studied since graduating college (or in some cases, high school). Do you guys have any recommendations for refresher materials in these subjects:
Mathematics
Physics
Chemistry
Philosophy (20th century core works)
Works on theories behind historical research
Psychology
Anatomy
Astronomy

Not ideal, but you could buy (cheap or used) textbooks.
I needed a math refresher a couple years back, and I bought a couple of "Complete Idiot's" guides. They're filled with shitty jokes but the material is solid.

Stand outside a college bookstore at the end of a semester and offer people $5 for books that the store offered $1 (or $0) because the book changes next term?

Or ask your friends and relatives. A year or two ago I wanted a math text book to keep the rust off. I just asked a few people and boom, I got a free algebra and trigonometry book.Hobie-wan wrote:Stand outside a college bookstore at the end of a semester and offer people $5 for books that the store offered $1 (or $0) because the book changes next term?

Re: Refresher works
There are free math guides out there for the GRE (standardized test to enter many grad school programs).
I used them in 2009 & they cover everything from fractions to probability to trigonometry.
You can't beat free!

Khan Academy is a good free resource for math brush up, it goes up to basic calculus and statistics. They also have physics, chemistry, and astronomy sections. I would definitely recommend it for math (haven't used it for the other stuff), unless you're looking into more advanced mathematics.
Re: Refresher works
I dread this myself if I end up needing to jump back in some of the main courses whenever I go back. I got up to trigonometry in high school and was awesome at it, but then dropped college algebra three times or something because I kept getting the worst teachers ever (one barely even spoke English). And yeah... just a few years later it's safe to say I scratch my head at algebra whenever I look at it now. lol
Always heard good things about Khan myself, so I'll probably consider that down the road.

What type of "Math" are you looking to refresh?
If accounting or finance is part of your equation (ho ho) let me know.
