game gear and sega master system questions

Post by mas »

I finally got my master system 2 and it sucks. My system and games are in very bad shape so I did the best I could to clean it up and I really like the first console a lot better than the second model.
Anyways I just wanted to ask if anyone here on racketboy has both the game gear and the master system and if they can tell me if let's say I buy sonic 1 or 2 for the master system if its a better port than the game gear, or is it a better to play sonic on a system than playing on the handheld.
I'm asking this because a lot of ports that made it to the game gear and also has the sms port, the sms port is costly.

The Game Gear is a pain in the ass, physically, to play. It's big and heavy and a huge battery drainer. I'd stick to SMS ports, assuming they're of comparable price and easy enough to find.

Screen quality is pretty bad now on a game gear. Back them we didn't care, but now you may not like it.

Save a ton on batteries by getting a yellow tipped Sega genesis power plug.

I haven't come across a sonic game for the master system. So I can't tell you if its better than the GG.

There are adapters for playing master system games on the game gear. I have yet to see one in person.

Most ports of Master System games to Game Gear are generally better played on the Master System. Ignoring all the obvious flaws with the Game Gear hardware, having more screen space is normally the main factor. Sonic 1 and 2 are exercises in frustration on the portable because you just run into stuff constanly that you can't see because the view is so zoomed in.

It's worth checking out the games before assuming that the SMS version is better though - some Game Gear games with the same name are in fact different games, such as Shinobi and Fantasy Zone.

I just got my game gear in the mail. I have to see at an angle and no sound= bad capacitors. Guy told me it worked fine and something happened to it in the mail. Anyways it was hard to play sonic. I think I'll just stick to my psp for a portable. I opened my master system 2 and there was soo much dead bugs in it and the motherboard is rusted. I'm going to just get a model1 master system. Is that model region free? And how much should I spend on a console only?

To an extent, there are some PAL games that will have problems but nothing that you'd want to play. I think on the original SMS there are a few Brazilian titles that won't work, namely the 8 megabit ones like Sonic Blast and Street Fighter II.

Well that's ok about a couple games. I don't think I can play an 8 bit version of street fighter anyways. I just want games like arcade ports, shinobi, sonic, golden axe warrior, etc. Would you guys go for complete or cartridge only?. I wanted to just get cart only but I got a few complete games and I'm really like the case and manuals and brochures to the master system.

Even though my game gear is messed up and I cant get a refund, I love the library of the game gear so any suggestions on how to get a good game gear thru ebay? I own 20= games so I really don't want to get rid of it. what are good ideas or tips to get one on ebay?

Only buy from sellers selling other retro game items. Their word on condition means more than some mom selling items online she found while antiquing.

Always message seller.

Request well padded, shipped in box. I've shelled out a couple bucks for proper shipping. Worth it.

Of course, 100% feedback with lots of sales is a plus.
