Good, lower priced SNES RPGs?

Post by Jagosaurus »

Hi all, I've always leaned towards the Genesis but there is NO denying the amazing RPG library on the SNES. I am looking for some quality RPGs, cart only in the $10-$20 range online.

So far all I can think of in this price range is Illusion of Gaia and Ys III. If titles are cheap, but lackluster please let me know.

... quick amazon search also lead me to: 7th Saga & FF Mystic Quest. Any good?

This will give me a good excuse to get into the system :) Thanks is advance!

I haven't played 7th Saga in a long time, but I remembering it being nothing special, but not bad either. FF Mystic Quest I did not care for at all.

There's Drakkhen, which I have not played, which you can find for a fiver. There's also Brain Lord, Lord of the Rings, and Secret of Evermore, all of which can be had for under $20. I haven't played Brain Lord yet, and LotR is OK, but Secret of Evermore is good.

Ah, yeah, this too, although it's on the higher end of under $20.

That's what I was gonna point out. Although BoF 2 on SNES is better (and more expensive).

It you want original SNES RPGs without paying an arm and a leg, Wii's Virtual Console is the way to go. That's how I recently played through Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire 2.

Thanks all! I'll look into those.

I saw Breath of Fire during my hunt and have my eye on it even through it's going for more around $25 on Amazon. Looks like it would be well spent.

My Wii's GPU is fried lol. Pixels blackout all over. I have a lauch console where the WiFi chips sits next to the GPU and overheats it. I'll eventually buy another Wii console only for $30-40 when I can find one at a pawn shop. I was thinking of playing Chrono Trigger on DS or the FF Chronicles disc on PSX.

I had a SNES last year and sold it to a friend who was getting back into the scene. It was the console I was least attached to and the one she desperately wanted. Now, I think I want to pick another console up and also some RPGs so I can really get my money worth! I can play a title months on end. I'll also be shelling out the cash for Link to the Past. The game I played the most back during my early SNES days.

FFMQ is a 'My First RPG' and was marketed as such. It isn't completely terrible, but it is a bit dumbed down and if you've played other RPGs you're likely to be less than satisfied with it.

The 7th Saga is one of the best games on the SNES. Hard as balls, but very rewarding. I recommend it.

Mystic Quest is a lot of fun too.

I really like FF Mystic Quest. The fact that it's not as good as IV/V/VI doesn't negate its innate awesomeness.
