That's what I think too. It's a bit strange for FPS games, but just about every good N64 game was designed with the 64 controller in mind (with the exception of a few ports from the PS1) so the strange design usually doesn't have a bad effect.Nyukki wrote:Just quickly, I never understood what people's beef with the stock 64 controller is. Starcraft 64 had co-op, it was really, really cool. But yeah, expect huge lag spikes about every 5 seconds and crazy controls. It's probably a huge cartridge.
I like most of what's been said so far. I think the PSX has aged way better, since there was far more frequent use of pre-rendered backdrops and textures around, which to this day has a charming aesthetic and still looks great. Lots of sprite based stuff too. The N64 on the other hand was mostly full 3D and thus is a bit chunkier around the edges.
I think one of the hardest things to adjust too going back for me is framerate. As others have said about Goldeneye. I don't know if I could play it again, especially after loving the HD port of Perfect Dark which fixed this, it's just hard to go back to those and other FPS's that were on the N64. The massive fog in things like Turok is also kind of a drag, considering a lot of similar games from that era on the PC didn't need that and have vastly better draw distance.
Controller complaints are pretty lazy to me, so it's not an issue, but for me it's a lot of the technical limitations and the constant use of fully 3D in most cases that makes the N64 hard to approach again.
I grew up an N64 fanboy... fast forward to now and I haven't had one out in ages, but I've had a PSX available in some form (PS2/PS3) and still keep busy with that stuff all the time and haven't looked back. In the long run the PSX is the winner by a long shot for me.

For me it's two things -- the analog stick (goofy to me from day 1) and the position of the C buttons, which seemed shoved out of the way to me. I had a 64, my buddy a few houses down had a PSX. Both had their strengths, even at the time.
