I couldn't say the same for some controllers, like the Model 2 Sega Saturn controller. I know, blasphemy, but that controller is not comfortable in my hands AT ALL.
I can understand, but I still love the saturn controller..but who am I to talk..the most comfortable controller in my opinion is the giant xbox hamburger pads. I get huge cramps and discomfort on my thumbs for the 3DS XL's thumbstick cause it is too small.
I've held one of those Duke controllers.....yeah it's hefty but not totally uncomfortable in my hands. I'm kinda weird when it comes to which controllers are comfortable in my hands and which ones aren't. NES controllers I can dig, but the sharp corners hurt my hands after a while. SNES controllers are pretty good, if a tad small, but the 3rd party Ascii pad is pretty much perfect in my hands. N64 controller is comfy to use. Gamecube, not quite as much due to my longer than normal fingers. PS1 controller I'm ok with thus far. Saturn I prefer model 1 over 2. Dreamcast controller I find to be actually pretty nice in my hands.
I'm very much with the original post on this. It's a generation that I really couldn't get into and spent those years firmly in the PC gaming camp where I found 3D games much more playable due to the keyboard and mouse.
The growing pains of early 3D games were a little hard for me to swallow, even when they were new. It's reflected in my collection today as I have very few N64 and PlayStation games and many of the PlayStation games I do have are 2D or at least games that don't require much in the way of three dimensional control.
Out of the consoles I own the N64 is probably the console I've spent the least time with and considering I'm not even a fan of Ocarina of Time or Goldeneye and I'm not usually big on 3D platforming, it's fairly obvious that I'm not a big fan of this platform. It doesn't help that I have a better time playing two of my favorite games on it elsewhere (Star Fox 64 on the 3DS and Doom 64 on PC with a total conversion).
In my opinion nobody really "got it" when it came to handling 3D games with controllers until the advent of dual analog. I also thought Sega made a big mistake by not including a second stick on the DC controller. I'm also in the group of people who finds the N64 controller very awkward though I give Nintendo credit for trying instead of just releasing it with a SNES-like controller as the initial PlayStation controller and no analog support at all.
It was all uncharted territory and I find the experimentation of that era more interesting than most of the actual games.
Now that 2D games are being made in modern settings, I can now see how the "ageless" 16 bit era can show age now as well. To me, any game that is older than 6 or 7 years is generally going to be rough around the edges with some exceptions here and there.
The n64 has games that are worth playing to this day, with that being said there are games that I think have aged terribly. I've made quite a few posts about how Goldeneye sucks now (though, you can play remakes of it for PC).
N64 still has the best wrestling games with the AKI series. Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie are still amongst the best 3D platformers I would say. Can't go wrong with some of the multiplayer action like Mario Kart, Smash Bros and F-Zero, none of those games have aged bad in particular, but you could make the argument that they all have superior versions on newer consoles.
It's worth looking into if you're a retro gamer. But yeah, there are a lot of duds on the N64's already tiny library.

I can't believe I forgot about the Goemon games. I do in fact love them. The Impact levels were a revelation!

rufus777 wrote:It's by far my least favorite console from that era. The lack of worthwhile 2D games, the blurriness of the graphics, the choppy framerates, the extremely limited library (limited mostly to genres I'm not too keen on, like FPSers, wrestling games, racing games, and 3D platformers), one of the worst controllers ever made.... as much N64 as I played back in the day, it's a system I have little interest in revisiting nowadays.

Difference being, the PSX and Saturn have a decent amount of 2D games to fall back on.
Typingin obnoxiousunreadablecolours(on the default forum style)is fun!
I loved the N64 in its day. Now with OoT, Starfox, & Mario 64 on my 3DS/DS... I'm set. Even Mario Kart DS has some of my favorite N64 tracks.
I never did get into Majora's Mask. If they ever did make a 3DS port, I'd be in.
Again, N64 fan but my 3 favorite games can be played via physical copies on my favorite handheld on the go... kind of eliminates my personal need for one.
... Doom64 is really my only other exception. Great game I wish I could play on my 3DS/DS
Just quickly, I never understood what people's beef with the stock 64 controller is. Sure it looks kinda funny, but it's essentially just a SNES pad with 6 face buttons and anyway you hold it it's pretty comfortable, in my opinion anyways.
I always thought, although Nintendo was clearly focused on the console being a showcase for the new 3D-era, more 2D titles wouldn't have gone amiss and the controller is perfectly suited. Some Street Fighter titles should have been ported over (Alpha etc.). I'm sure the N64 could handle them if the PSX could plus no load times and a 6 button controller!
