Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
Re: Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
You can have modern controls yet still maintain the atmosphere of the original games. Im not sayin revelations is perfect but you cant say re6 is better when that game fails in everyway... and i like re5!

Re: Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
Ooh, I've been waiting for a new RE announcement!
I have to admit I was hoping for 7, but this is cool too. I still have to play the original Revelations though (I've only tried the demo) but I was planning to tackle that soon anyway.
Fingers crossed for Claire. Not sure if that's viable for Revelations, but I can hope.
I also didn't know that REmake was being remastered. That's pretty awesome, and while I'm bummed its digital only, I'll still be grabbing it when it comes out.

A lot of people who haven't played Revelations yet... would love to see the reactions.
RE6 was an action game. It didn't try to be anything else.
RER tries to do both and just fails.
How about those water parts? GUAHHHG! I forgot about those, so awful.

Re: Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
RE: Revelations was awesome (for an RE game). It absolutely nailed the atmosphere but kind of failed any time it tried to become an action game. So about 2/3rds of it was great.
It also helps that it was and probably still is the strongest 3DS game graphically.
I'm hoping for another 3DS version. The console versions didn't control nearly as well despite having two analog sticks.

Older. Not wiser.
Re: Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
RE 6 is the one who tries to be survival and action and fails big time.

Re: Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
I enjoyed Revelations on 3DS. I would buy a sequel on 3DS or Vita.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

graffix13: Yes, around 1/2 of it, just didn't really do it for me. Yes it wasn't anywhere near as wooden a the previous titles though which was nice but it still felt stiff in combat.
Ack: True enough, and no I don't like the originals other than my partial tolerance of RE2 and Codename Veronica I played as far as the later sequence in the back of a cargo plane and I stopped there on it. RE I've had a huge love hate thing for. I like the cheese story and environments, but I loathe to death the shitty camera angles, the tank like controls, the gross lack of of ammo, and in the earlier titles the overly cryptic to annoyance puzzles of sorts with items and wonky descriptions.
My like of RER is that I personally felt the controls were smooth. I never was in a fight with the camera angles as it wasn't static or getting stuck in stuff. I didn't have a problem unless you really just go hollywood movie gunplay nuts in it with running out of ammo. I just liked the atmosphere, it kind of reminded me of the original Dead Space where the scare value was based upon creepy settings and unsettling audio/lighting, not cheap pop scares and panic over odd screen static angles and bad control mechanics. I've never liked Capcom's idea of 'survival horror' being based upon poor controls and odd camera angles with pop scares, I like it about the whole atmosphere like Dead Space. I know that stuff infuriates old RE fans but that style really is dead as they have to keep up with the competition and sadly they're not doing it right with the main line story and some side things (RE6 and Raccoon City.)

Re: Resident Evil Revelations 2 Leaked
But those mechanics resulted from a combination of dealing with movement in a 3D space(remember, Resident Evil predates the analog stick on PlayStation controllers) and using the mechanics to foster tension in the game. The camera angles you're denigrating were actually inspired directly from horror cinema, and the limited ammunition, items, and difficult control mechanics helped to upset the player and add to the experience. Not only did it make for a more intense experience, it helped make the game more difficult but less accessible.Tanooki wrote:Ack: True enough, and no I don't like the originals other than my partial tolerance of RE2 and Codename Veronica I played as far as the later sequence in the back of a cargo plane and I stopped there on it. Going with your Dead Space example, the fluid controls, easy to use camera, and plentiful ammunition don't foster a sense of impending dread high enough to make you quit playing the game(they don't foster a sense of impending dread at all. They're basically interchangeable with something like Uncharted). Instead, Dead Space uses techniques similar to other things Resident Evil did to continue to ratchet up tension:
a claustrophobic atmosphere (the maze-like mansion versus the darkened spaceship)
an appeal to body horror and fears of death, mutation, and mutilation (the walking dead and the necrophagists)
a background theme raging against a large edifice in society (pharmaceutical corporations in Resident Evil, religion in Dead Space)
large amounts of blood and gore
jump scares (enemies pretending to be dead, enemies popping out of small or unexpected spaces[windows or air vents], enemies teasing you with a potential confrontation and then arriving from a completely different angle)
Dead Space does also offer a "limited ammunition" mechanic, since it only spawns ammunition for weapons you own, meaning the more weapons, the less ammunition for any particular one of them, though this can easily be circumvented by using only a single weapon, which is actually quite easy to do considering the effectiveness of the plasma cutter. Here is another area where the two of them differ: Dead Space's base gun is considerably more powerful and easy to use. The first time I played through the game, I felt no reason to ever change to anything else, as I had plentiful ammunition and could easily dispatch anything and everything I encountered. If anything, the plasma cutter's effectiveness made the game too easy. Resident Evil, on the other hand, was a bit more subtle with its tricks and techniques: the characters will turn their heads to look at oncoming enemies, and there is a certain amount of auto-aim. But the base pistol is less effective until used at pointblank range. And Resident Evil also uses sound mechanics for effectiveness: each enemy type makes a particular sound, so as soon as you enter a room, a trained ear can identify exactly what is contained within.
The end result for me was, again, to make Dead Space feel too easy. I'd already gotten used to such dark atmosphere and audio work, resource management, and looking at gore from my "old school" survival horror experiences. Once I learned the limb-cutting mechanic, nothing posed a threat anymore, because even new enemies could easily be analyzed and cut apart. If anything, the difference was to make the gameplay more accessible for people who were infuriated by the older aspects which added to the genre's intensity. It broadened the customer base but watered down the material. That's why survival horror was a niche genre and is now often considered dead in lieu of "action horror," which has mass appeal.
You might think I'm knocking you and Dead Space for this. I'm not. But I am saying that Dead Space has more in common with other aspects of Resident Evil than you think, it's just an easier and more popular game because it dropped some of the mechanics of survival horror which kept people from getting into the genre. It's more commercially viable to make an action horror game with similarities to Uncharted than a classic survival horror game, like Deadly Premonition.
