I always associate the black boxes with the Genesis' hey day, and the red ones with kind of a 'blah' era. I'd like to compile or see a list of quality games in the black box era vs the red box era though. There's some good ones later on despite my feelings (Ristar, Vectorman, Castlevania Bloodlines, etc.)
I just wanted to add that over in Europe we had the much more appropriate BLUE Mega Drive boxes, instead of the red.

which I think you can AT LEAST debate that it looks better than the original, while the red Genesis boxes (question: were ALL red Genesis boxes paper ones btw? Cause Sonic 3 EU comes in a blue yet plastic box, while S&K is in a paper onw), just look ugly and....well....red is hte color of Nintendo, SEGA is blue....how hard was to get that right?

Nah, quite a lot of the red spine Genesis games were originally in clamshell cases. The shift to cardboard came later than that. Some games, like Earthworm Jim, have both versions out there, I think due to Majesco using cardboard for reprints.

Sega did use blue in the U.S., but for Sega CD. Yellow for 32X, white/off-white for Saturn (and then silver for some), purple for Game Gear... It was a fairly unified look for them.

The neon green ps1 cases don't bother me. Maybe because I like neon green? I prefer them to the PS2 cases... maroon? Blech. At the end of the day I don't go out of my way to avoid player's choice stuff though, except maybe some of the one off bad examples like that genesis greatest hit. As long as I have at least a few to stack next to each other on the shelf I don't mind.

Looks good to me!

I actually don't mind the JPN Saturn greatest hits releases with the white border & red spine. Looks sharp for that type of packaging IMO.

I really dislike the PS3 cases that are red.

I don't usually care. As long as it's CiB, i wouldn't care weather or not it was covered in polka dots!

I do, however, have preferences within them. I don't like the PS1 greatest hits a lot. PS2 & PS3 greatest hits look good though, and the red color doesn't bother me.

My favorite is the GC "Player's Choice" It's yellow at the bottom, and a small line at the top. I usually don't even notice if it's 'greatest hits' or not. :D

I actually really like the green PS1 greatest hits and anything green in general, since it is my favorite color. I don't care for the red PS2 greatest hits, or the yellow Gamecube one.

Greatest Hits/Platinums/Selects/Players Choice, are good to buy if they include extra DLC, like GOTY edition Hits.

I just think it's beyond dumb to make your product look uglier on a shelf because it's a reissue.

To be fair, both the master system and mega drive had a black and red colour scheme, so red isn't that crazy a choice.
