Finished Riddick-Butcher Bay. I'll be writing up a few lines about it in the Games Beaten thread.
From here it looks like I may dust off Ghost Recon on the laptop here and/or continue ROTT 2013 on the more powerful desktop.
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

For some reason I have been craving Catacomb 3-D and the like lately, so I installed the Catacombs Pack and have begun playing through them all. Three of the games in the pack don't really belong in this thread (Catacomb, The Catacomb, Dangerous Dave), but the rest do, so I figured this was a good place to discuss it. Have any of you guys ever gotten into the Catacomb series?

I've beaten Catacomb and Catacomb 3D and have started in on Abyss and dabbled a bit with The Catacomb. Very primitive games and lots of button mashing, but Abyss starts to actually have interesting level design.Ack wrote:For some reason I have been craving Catacomb 3-D and the like lately, so I installed the Catacombs Pack and have begun playing through them all. I ended up playing through Abyss last night all the way and was surprised about how inventive and varied it was. I also fired up and ran through the first level of Apocalypse, and I continue to be impressed. The last time I played Catacomb 3-D was years ago, so I will need to go back to it, but for now I'm quite pleased with how the series turned out after Softdisk completely took it over.

I played Abyss years ago. Still holds up well.

Playing Moon Chronicles on 3DS. Check out that map... reminds me of Doom. Love the labyrinth design. Visuals remind me of Quake but blacks replaced with blues.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
As promised, I am continuing with my updates from Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
(herein referred to as GRAW due to also playing the original GR concurrently on 2 separate machines)
The first mission, a tutorial of sorts, ended up being rather frustrating. The simple fact that there are checkpoint saves and no quicksave feature hurts, but by reloading a checkpoint you and your squad get a little bit of health spotted.
The second mission worked a little better, I finally figured out how to use the real time tactical map and split everyone up, and despite the reports I saw of rather spotty squad AI, everyone did fine, took out a whole bunch of enemies saving me time and health, and also lived. It was a good idea to implement the mouse wheel to select and execute commands by clicking it. The ZEUS bazooka is far more advanced than any weapon I've seen in this series so far, with a heat seeking feature. I also have to mention those graphics.
The overall presentation also reminds me of Rainbow Six Vegas a little it, with the near simultaneous HUD and video feeds in real time.
Here's to hoping the frustration factor stays to a minimum.

In the earlier levels the AI is okay. In the later levels when the difficulty takes the kid gloves off, your friendly AI will become... let's say a liability. I ended up ordering my dudes to stay put while I went and cleared a level myself because of that. Maybe things will work out better for you though. Really looking forward to your experiences with the latter half of this game.ExedExes wrote:despite the reports I saw of rather spotty squad AI, everyone did fine
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
That was exactly what I did on the first mission. I couldn't trust them, so I slowly and methodically took out all threats, only when we were clear for extraction I had them get upstairs. I find myself going it alone on a *lot* of these supposedly tactical FPS; except for maybe Rainbow Six Vegas, even the other RS games I cleared rooms/areas out so that my teammates wouldn't die.
At least on the first GR, if your tactical planning fails, just reload the quicksave slot cuz the AI is just slightly above that of GRAW so far
I also understand that there will also be a few "lone wolf" missions, like in GR2.
Do you happen to know what happens if a teammate dies and you complete a mission? Do you get them back or are you down to a 3-man team on the next mission?

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Strangely enough, I honestly don't remember. I want to say that on some missions if you lose a squadmate you fail the mission, but I might be wrong about that. The reason I don't remember is because I hardly used my squadmates. I just remember my squadmates were so ineffectual that I stuck them in a corner and handled all the opposition myself for the most part, so they didn't die because of that. Although on the final mission, I did have to utilize their help but I still had to baby sit them the whole time. The final mission is brutal man.ExedExes wrote:Do you happen to know what happens if a teammate dies and you complete a mission? Seriously this is the hardest FPS I've ever personally beaten. (And that was without cheats of course.) If you beat this game you will have my respect for sure.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
