SNK Saturn Imports

Post by r0bot j0nes »

I was pretty excited to see that a bunch of SNK titles made their way onto the Saturn in Japan, and I'm dying to get my hands on 'em. :3

I'm a bit bummed out I'll have to buy a japanese Saturn in order to enjoy KOF '95, so before I go buying up a storm on eBay, which SNK titles on the Saturn will -NOT- work properly with an Action Replay Pro? These are the games I will pick up once I invest in an import Saturn console. :)

There's nothing quite like fighting games with a Saturn Controller eh?

KOF 95 aside, I don't think that there are a whole lot of incompatibilities with the PAR cart. In fact, switching the carts very often can make the slot finicky so I just leave it in and forget about that particular game (and play it on PS2 instead  ).

Favorite SNK fighter for the system:
Samurai Spirits IV: Amakusa's Revenge (and in English too  )

I've been told to stay away from Fatal Fury 3 on the Saturn, but the Real Bouts are fun.

Great chart Hobie. I'm always digging up old forum threads and reading through pages and pages of info to get the contents of what that chart describes LOL.

Makes you wonder, if the carts could actually hold game info (ROM), I feel like the cart slot could really be used for a lot more than it was. I would think the home brew scene would also be huge.

Do AR carts have the same issues with some (SNK) games as the official 4MB carts do? Samurai Spirits, Real Bout Fatal Fury with the corrupt graphics and Metal Slug with the slowdowns?

I always just use to cart it was designed for (1MB / 4MB) to avoid the issues, but wondering if AR had them.

I've got the Fatal Fury Best Collection, the Samurai Spirits Best Collection and the latest AR cart. One of the two games in each collection has graphical glitches with my AR cart. I researched the problem a while back, it appears that certain revisions of the Saturn motherboard and the AR cart (even if it is the latest version) don't play nice with some SNK titles.

So my options are:
1. Get a region free bios installed and use an official 1MB cart.
2. Import a Japanese Saturn and use an official 1MB cart
3. Buy more US Saturns and hope for a revision of motherboard that is compatible.

I'll probably go with option #1 eventually but I am in no rush.

I don't think that SS, KOF and FF games ever gave me issues with my model 2 (round buttons) Saturn with the PAR+. But I have definitely heard of the phenomenon.
Metal Slug may have a little slowdown, but I always thought it was inherent to the port.

If you try it with an official 1MB and a official 4MB cart, you can see heaps more slow down, more so with the boss fights. Part of the reason I think it gets a bum write up usually.

I plan to buy a japanese Saturn soon, as I want to actually have the means to play KOF '95 and other games without any slowdown issues. Also, when it comes to the Saturn, I just like collecting. :3

Thankfully KOF '96 and '97 dont have that issue.
