Re: Nintendo 3DS
I've actually been considering buying a 2DS, because the majority of long RPGs on the 3DS I'd rather play in 2D. It's to do with something about reading lots of text in 3D dialogue boxes layered on top of each other, that does not agree well with my eyes. Trouble is, when you slide the 3D slider all the way to off on the 3DS XL, the screen suddenly has massive scanlines. I know this isn't just my 3DS XL either, as I've seen it on other units too. So I've been thinking of buying a 2DS just for playing long assed RPGs on in hopes its screen won't have the scanlines. Anybody have a 2DS? How's the IQ on it?

Scan lines not present on my 3DS XL... weird
Nintendo is stopping production of the 2DS (if they haven't already). I'd grab one quick before the prices climb above retail for NIB.

Mine doesn't either, the original panel or the replacement they threw in when they replaced them due to an issue. If that 2DS really isn't made anymore, odds are it will get expensive fast due to the scalpers. Look what happened to the equally short lived GB Micro if you get one new.

With a quick Google search can't find anything on them not producing the 2DS any more but could've sworn I read it or heard it on a podcast.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
Scanlines might not be the best way to describe what I'm talking about. I'm talking about gaps between the pixels. When the 3DS XL is in 3D mode, the gaps between pixels are all equal. But when you slide it into 2D mode, that pixel gap widens on the horizontal columns. Yet the vertical columns gain an extra pixel, practically having no gap. So you end up with an effect that sort of looks like scanlines.
Maybe you guys aren't looking closely enough? Here is a picture showing exactly what I'm talking about:
I actually found a thread on GBAtemp talking about this:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-3ds-3d- ... 2d.340847/
I don't think the 2DS is going anywhere soon, at least not until Nintendo brings the New 3DS over here and needs to liquidate stock. But I do plan to buy a 2DS within a few months. And here's why:
I'll still play 3D enhanced action games on the 3DS XL though, basically everything that's not a JRPG with a lot of text.

What you are seeing here is a doubling up of scanlines from the parallax barrier. With 3D on you're doubling the horizontal resolution of the frame buffer the display then cuts this in half and sends the left side to the right eye and the right side to the left eye via the parallax barrier. You're seeing an artifact of this process when the angles are so narrow that there is a bleed of the 'scanline' aka the gap between the pixel. There is literally nothing you can do about this other than adopt some sort of retina technology where the pixels are practically invisible (along with the gaps between them). This increases resolution and by extension inhibits performance on the machine without a beefier GPU to drive those pixels. A 'retina' screen will effectively mean that the GPU would need to drive an additional 422,400 pixels. It's basically 3x the resolution of the original screen.

Which we know Nintendo would not do due to cost reasons. I understand from a hardware perspective what's going on here, it's just personally I find the scanline effect to be detrimentally distracting. Hence I plan to buy a 2DS for the 3DS games I'd rather play in 2D.Niode wrote:A 'retina' screen will effectively mean that the GPU would need to drive an additional 422,400 pixels. You know you can boot DS games in the native resolution, right? Hold select as it boots. IIRC doing this on a 3DS XL makes the play area the same size roughly as the DSi screens.retrosportsgamer wrote:Does the 2DS run DS games in a better native resolution than the original 3DS?

Yep, I'm familiar with that, I was just curious how the 2DS handled.Jagosaurus wrote:You know you can boot DS games in the native resolution, right? Hold select as it boots.
