Hey guys so i just bought a Sega Genesis Model 1.
I know it only came with a white and yellow chord. Honestly i dont like the sound I put in Primal Rage (which i just bought LOVE THAT GAME!) and it didnt sound that great or at least not from i remember from way back. So i want to know if there's a way to make the sound better? Like can i buy a white/yellow/red chord that will work for my sega? Or if theres anything else to recommend to make the sound better(besides using the headphone jack of coarse) please let me know

The model 1 only outputs mono audio from the rear multi AV output. The only way you can get stereo sound out of it is by using the headphones output on the front of the console. If you want to hook that up to your TV, you'll need the appropriate cables and/or adapters.
If your model 1 sounds like shit, you might have one of the later revisions that really do sound like shit. Later revisions to the model 1 and early revisions of the model 2 have just flat out terrible audio. There's a constant static, it sounds somewhat muffled, there's little to no bass, and I think the mix is all wrong.

huh...interesting thank you...is there anyway to find out if mine is a later model? either by the serial number or do later models have different physical characteristics than earlier models? and why are the latter models sound so shitty?

I think the images in that thread are borked. If they worked, you could use the information in the photos to determine which revision you have. The most sure way is to open up the Genesis and check the motherboard for the revision code.
As to the reason... Sega was constantly monkeying with the arrangements of chips on the board and new suppliers in efforts to reduce manufacturing costs. Sometimes they negotiated for large numbers of, essentially, crappy chips. I think the Sega Genesis is the least consistent of any video game system around in terms of variances in audio and video output related to different internal hardware configurations.

If your console has "High Definition Graphics" above the cart slot, then it is an earlier model and does NOT suffer from the terrible audio. If it does not have High Definition Graphics, then you'll have to research further to find out. I know the pics are down in the link I posted, but there still might be some info you can read to determine what revision you have (ex: If the serial port is present or not). Otherwise, like marurun said, you can open the console up and find out exactly what revision it is (it's printed on the motherboard). You only need a #2 phillipshead to open it.

Its an earlier model its the model 1 that says high definition graphics on the top. I'm almost thinking the crappy audio is from just the Primal Rage game. I wonder if i either have a defective copy or i know they had a hard time bringing the arcade game to consoles due to some kinda weird coding the developers used for the arcade version. Just the sound is really weird. Anyone have a copy of this game for the genesis and not have it sound at ALL like the arcade version?
