Yeah, while I think Trick 'r Treat is the best horror film of 2000-2010, The Descent is definitely up there. I still haven't seen the sequel though.

From 2000-'10:
I'd say Trick r Treat is possibly the best homage to the holiday created in recently. It really captured the Halloween spirit.

Agree The Descent is terrifying on many levels & uses atmosphere and lighting to create a feeling of fear like no other film I'd seen.

Another from this timeframe that I like & many don't is the remake of Amityville Horror. It wins "creepy factor award" to me because the flashbacks throughout the movie are real crime scene footage & photos of the actual murders. That makes the hair on my neck stand up thinking about it.

I thought that Trick 'r Treat was an excellent tribute to the Halloween season, but I did not think it was a terribly effective horror film. (It is more than a bit overacted; it is too slickly produced; it doesn't stick to its "horror comics" framing device very well; it moves between narratives too frequently; it is not very frightening or suspenseful; and some of the scenes and soundtrack choices are laughable.) Personally, I think that Creepshow (and even V/H/S) are better horror anthologies. Accordingly, I do not consider it to be one of the best horror films of the 2000s.

IMO, that honor belongs to Ti West's spectacular The House of the Devil (2009). 28 Days Later, Dark Water, The Descent, Drag Me to Hell, Dumplings, Ginger Snaps, The Host, Let the Right One In, The Orphanage, The Others, Pulse, The Ring, Session 9, A Tale of Two Sisters, and Them are also very solid horror films made during this time period, and I don't think that Trick 'r Treat really compares to any of them. (I have not seen - but have read good things about - Behind the Mask, Cure, The Devil's Rejects, The Eye, The House of 1000 Corpses, and REC, all of which were also released in the 2000s.)

I loathed V/H/S and thought it was absolutely terrible.

And of those mentioned, I preferred Trick 'r Treat and would much rather go back and watch it any day of the week.

Honestly, that is kind of the reaction I expected when I wrote I was underwhelmed by Trick 'r Treat...
