The general consensus is that it's pretty pointless, is it not? I have the impression that it's considered a bad joke. Mostly in good-humor, but still.

Although I guess that would mean it's less a "love/hate" situation and more of a "love/meh." Perhaps passions don't run high enough for this one to be technically on-topic. Nevermind. :)
Actually everytime I see that thing pop up around here, I kinda wish I had one. I mean it's the kind of thing I wish every console manufacturer did for their systems. I love all my games i have especially on my home consoles and sometimes wish I could take them all with me without having to repurchase them. I know it had horrible bad battery life from what I've heard, and wasn't as popular as it could've/should've been(kinda like the tg16/pce from what I keep hearing), but still a interesting little device that I wouldn't mind adding it and a wonderswan to my collection some day....

The only consoles I have owned, had substantive libraries for, and then decided I didn't like them enough to keep are the N64 and 3DO. With the N64 I made that decision twice since after parting with one I ended up picking up a big lot that included the system and its best games again...

For me my "hate" of the N64 comes down to just not liking the controller OR the library, which is saying something considering I collect(ed) for the 7800 and 32X. Cross-platform games at the time were almost always better elsewhere and the few Nintendo exclusive games I did enjoy or that are the most heralded - Mario Kart, Mario 64, Star Fox, Sin and Punishment, Zelda games, etc. are now all available elsewhere to play with far better controllers and (often) extra features.

I don't begrudge someone for liking it, but I've had no qualms or regrets excising it from my retro collection.

Why you hold a grudge against people liking certain consoles in general?

I wouldn't, but I didn't want people to interpret my own dislike as a condemnation of their enjoyment...as can sometimes happen.

Even the NES imo is barely strong enough to support games that can be universtialy enjoyed to this day.
I'm actually shocked by how many retro gamers don't like 2nd gen consoles and use the NES as their "starting point."

The Atari 2600 is absolutely brilliant and the clear winner of that gen, but the other major systems (and there are many) are great as well. I love looking back to that era; so much experimentation and innovation in game and hardware design.

I find it surprising that someone like you - who has pretty diverse taste in gaming and also seems to like "underdog" systems - would dislike either one of those consoles.

Pre-NES console stuff can just be a little too primitive to some to do more than just appreciate it for what it was. I certainly had my time with a 2600, but I don't feel any desire to replay it.

Also, I had two Nomads. The first one was stolen, so I was given another. I loved that thing. Mortal Kombat anywhere? Hell yeah. (As long as there was an outlet near by.)

I think that Nintendo's Wii is the ultimate love-it-or-hate-it console. I understand why so many people hate it. Many of the games in its library implement motion controls unsuccessfully; its library is crammed full of lazy mini-game collections and shoddy ports; and the machine does not output HD visuals.

I, however, love the machine, and I think it is Nintendo's best system since the NES. There are some truly amazing first-party games in the system's library, and the system received a lot of great third-party exclusives. Moreover, there are a tremendous number of "hidden gems" in the system's libary, and the Wii was home to some of the best "old fashioned" games of its generation. The Wii's library is also so full of creative game ideas that even some of its worst games - such as Ninjabread Man, Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Wacky Races - had a certain amount of charm. Finally, I think that motion controls, when implemented successfully, can add quite a bit to many video games, and I think that the pointer made the Wii the best system of its generation for adventure games, puzzle games, and rail shooters.

The Wii has been the best local multiplayer console I've ever had. That alone makes it one of my all time favorites.

The Wii is pretty amazing for local multiplayer. Taking all the "okay, so you hold L2 while pushing Y to do this and..." out of the equation makes things really easy for people to get into.

Pretty surprised no one has mentioned the 32x or Sega CD.

They both fall in the "ehhh you're mediocre with a handful of decent games" category for me. At least the RPGs on the SCD were legit.

....so when I made the thread & said "hate" I obviously didn't mean that to be 100% literal. If your stuck on that word think of it as "Love it or extremely dislike" lol.
