To be clear, I am talking about the Japanese Sony PSX, not just a standard PS1. I am trying to find some info on it, but google is making it hard because for some reason people like to refer to the PS1 as the PSX. Never really understood that.
I know this has a PS2 built into it, but does it have all the functionality of a regular PS2, like the ability to play PS1 games?
I also know it didn't come with a controller, does a typical controller connect to it, or do you need some special controller or adapter?
And finally, what cords does it use? Is it the standard PS1/2 hookup?
Thanks in advance for anyone that can shed some light on this.

As far as I know PSX is the right abbreviation for the first playstation. I always assumed ps1 came later as the ps2 and redesigned psone was introduced.

As far as I know the original Japanese playstation is just a PS1, but not the redesigned PSOne.
Originally Sony was making a CD attachment for Nintendo's next console (eventually the N64). Things went bad, the project was scrapped. The project never had an official name outside of project X. When the first playstation was released, it was referred to as Playstation X.
As for your questions - it uses the same controllers and cables as a US PS1.

From what I understand, it does play PS1 games... however, it's also very prone to failure. Finding a working system will set you back a lot.
You can find junk systems for really cheap, but I have no idea what causes it to fail so much and what is needed to fix it.
I really wanted one myself, but after learning about all that, I think I'll just take a standard white Japanese PS2.

Thanks for the links, there was some good info in there. I must have somehow overlooked that Wikipedia one. Its good to know it works with the standard American PS2 hook ups, it gets hard to tell with the pictures.
This seems like the best looking way to get into Japanese PS1/2 games, way better than the standard PS2. Its cool it uses the cross media bar too, that'll make navigating some of that Japanese gibberish easier since it will be presented in a familiar manner.

I beliebe LukeM or Gamester81 has a video on YT... try searching PSX DVR.

For hook ups, PSX has individual AV jacks. Pretty sure that means it lacks RGB SCART (if pointless to us).
