DQIII is insanely good, but it is by no means simple. If you are thinking of playing it, grab the GBC version. It is probably the best 8-bit RPG. (Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy are the runners-up.)Snake wrote:I love the simplicity. I've never played the sequels, but 2 and 3 seem very similar; I bet they are good.

Is it "Quest" or "Warrior"? I know they're the same series, but I thought the North American versions were "Warrior". Did they change it for the GBC release?
Also, why GBC over NES? Thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Top 5 RPGs
Dragon Quest games were "Dragon Warrior" games in the US due to the fact that "Dragon Quest" was copyrighted by a tabletop (I think?) RPG of some sort.
The copyright eventually expired and now it's Dragon Quest in both regions. This happened after part VII. So here in the US Dragon Warrior VII is followed by Dragon Quest VIII. The GBC games all have the "Warrior" titles.

Sorry. I refer to them all as "Quest" now, but the GBC version is actually titled "Dragon Warrior III".Snake wrote:Is it "Quest" or "Warrior"? I know they're the same series, but I thought the North American versions were "Warrior". Did they change it for the GBC release?

The GBC version- which is actually based on the SFC remake - trumps the NES version because: (1) it contains a better introduction; (2) it adds new classes; (3) it adds new minigames; (4) it adds collectible "medals"; and (5) it adds two, insanely difficult post-game dungeons. The GBC version also has slightly improved graphics and sound, and it contains battle animations. Most importantly, however, the GBC version is much more "player friendly" than the NES original. It is no less difficult than the NES version, but the game no longer requires you to open a menu to open doors and navigate stairs. It is also portable and contains a "quick save" feature. All of these "player friendly" features combine to make the game much more accessible and enjoyable.

Re: Top 5 RPGs
Dragon Quest I through VI all have ports that are vastly superior to the original.
I'd probably say the same thing about VII if the damn thing ever gets localized
As for the first Final Fantasy...
The music and overall atmosphere is also incredible. I highly recommend the GBA port as it removes the level-grinding element and streamlines the game into an incredibly pleasurable experience.

This is why I enjoy it as well. It's a perfect combination of 1980s swords and sorcery, mythological/religious references, and Japanese quirkiness. The threadbare plot is an asset rather than a detractor, as it lets the player create his or her own story like a classic D&D tabletop session. Vastly preferable to all the heavy-handed dialogue of the newer games.Snake wrote:I like the simple, classic charm of the original.

How did we not have a user named Snake yet?

FF1 is really good, don't think I'd ever call it top 5 though, probably not a top five Final Fantasy.
I didn't like Dragon Warrior 1 much at all tbh. I'd put Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy over it.

More PSIV love needed!
Won't lie.... too hard of a list to narrow down for me.
DQV, PSIV, OoT (here comes the bebate)....all there for me.
I think I'd place FE Awakening in my top 5. I was VERY addicted.... play it my truck during lunch addicted.

You are correct good sir:BoneSnapDeez wrote:Dragon Quest games were "Dragon Warrior" games in the US due to the fact that "Dragon Quest" was copyrighted by a tabletop (I think?) RPG of some sort.

SPI released it in 1980 and it is the first known RPG to use a skill system over a class system. Funny enough, it was originally called Dragonslayer but Disney had a film of the same name, so they had to change their name in 79 before it was released:
