VIII was my first DQ game and I fell in love with it. Once I get through the DS games I definitely plan to replay it.

There's something truly amazing about the world map in that game. Everything feels to scale and it truly feels like a journey from place to place. Great music certainly helps.
I do enjoy the musical score. Fimilar sound effects & enemies add to it as well.

I can see myself spending a lot of the summer on this one. IIRC there is some kind of monster ranch element. I was unexpectedly addicted to this in DQV where it was first introduced.

Yeah VIII has that.

As for me I've been playing Golden Sun lately. About 10 hours in. The most enjoyable part of the game is definitely the Djinn stuff and also being able to utilize abilities in dungeons and on the field to access hidden areas and whatnot.

Which Golden Sun? I've only played Dark Dawn on the DS. Had a good time but want to try the GBA titles which are reportedly better.

Started up Legend of Grimrock because

A) it is easy to run on a laptop and looks ace on my macbook pro (my desktop PC is out of commission for now)

B) My recent trek through Eye of the Beholder was my first experience with the subgenre, and I want to see what it looks like today...

There's some things that I like better about the systems used in Grimrock, but on the other hand there are some things that EotB did that are strangely missing from this one (e.g. the spell-learning system seems simplified in LoG).

I am also curious: what other "key" games exist in the vein? What are the "must plays" between EotB and Grimrock (and, perhaps, anything that's come out since)?

Betrayal at Krondor is essential. My favorite WRPG of all time.

For more D&D, Treasure of Tarmin on Intellivision/DS/PC is pretty fun. I'm not too familiar with most of the other first-person D&D games. Of the ones I've played EotB is the best.

I'm sure you know about the Wizardry and Might & Magic games. Be aware that they are hard as balls. Old-school Ultima titles have first-person dungeons as well.

On the Japanese front there is Shining in the Darkness (first game in the overall Shining series) and Arcana. The five Etrian Odyssey titles are also insanely good.

Hmm, I actually do know of most of these. I played around with Tarmin a little before playing EotB…will play again, for sure.

Krondor isn't first person, right?

Is is during all the exploration. It switches to a side view during combat though. Some of the old D&D games are like this too. In fact, I think the GBA EotB is as well.

Honestly they're all great titles. I will admit that I've only "technically" beat the originals(got to the final boss and got stuck each time ha ha so I'll go back and replay them in the future with a guide for all the dijnn). Lost age is a great follow up, and dark dawn is really good too though i really wish they'd of stuck with the 2d pixel art style of the originals instead of going 3d chibi....

I could never get into Betrayal at Kronder. Even though I have it in my PC collection, there was something about it that never engaged me. Of course, I tried playing it when I was younger, so that may be a part of it. Guess I should try and fire it up again sometime.
