Fun sports games for the Sega Saturn?

Post by ninjainspandex »

As I have pretty much completed my Sega Saturn collection, at least the ones worth owning. I have passed over ALOT of sports games, I have aquired a few over the years as I can't resist buying one if it is priced for a dollar or two if it has a nice case to swap with a more beat up case in my collection. But are any of these sports games worth playing today? I very much enjoy golf games like Neo Turf Masters and Mario Golf, any decent golf games on the Saturn? I also enjoy Hockey, any reason to check out NHL 98 over NHL 2K14?

And since the World Cup is going on what about the Soccer games on the Saturn? Or what about basketball? I have the NBA Jam games and they are a total blast.

Let's discuss what most people pass over for the Saturn, the copious amounts of sports games, perhaps we can find some hidden gems for cheap.

Anything by Sega Sports is good.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is essential.

Ahh your right! Very much like Neo Turf Masters, right up my ally. Hmm I wonder if I should buy the US or JP version. I assume the JP version would be just as playable, they are both the same price and I tend to prefer to have more JP games as they take up far less space and are alot easier to find in better condition.

World Series Baseball 98 is, in my opinion one of the best baseball video games ever. The way they approached batting was a blast to play. You can pick a region of your strike zone to guess where the pitch might be and if you guess correct, it locks on, if you guess wrong, you just have to aim your bat in the right position before swinging. The only thing it really misses is an in depth franchise mode as you are stuck with a basic season mode.

The Worldwide Soccer series is highly regarded. Also, you would do very well to pick up a copy of Decathlete. It is a great sports game for people that don't like sports games.

I should probably mention that baseball is my absolute least favorite sport haha. What about football (or handegg for our Euro friends)? One of my all time favorite sports games is Tecmo Super Bowl on thr NES, anything like that?

Oh I should mention that decathalete is a port of a Sega STV arcade game very fun, check out it's sister game Winter Heat a fun winter olympic sports game.

VR Golf '97. trust me.

the Sega Sports '98 lineup (NBA Action, NHL All-Star Hockey, World Series Baseball, Worldwide Soccer) are all excellent, too.

Cool topic but I'll admit I've done more research and collecting when it comes to the Saturn sports library than actually playing. I'm hoping to change that.

The World Series Baseball series is fantastic. Anything by the SEGA Sports team is solid. Always thought they got saddled with a crappy gimmick with the NHL All-Star series name. I also have Pebble Beach Golf and both NBA Action games. NBA Action '98 was designed by Visual Concepts, who of course would go on to make the 2K series of sports franchises for take-two. This is their first basketball game.

3D Baseball was one that always intrigued me. Crystal Dynamics made a baseball game - and it is licensed too! It used to be somewhat valuable ($40 range) but has tanked in recent years.

Decathlete is on my want list also - i'm a fan of those SEGA arcade sports games. Winter Heat sounds good too.

Worth noting one of the hockey games supports the multi tap.

I also have one of the hockey games I really enjoy. I'll look when I get home. Maybe NHL 96. It doesn't look pretty lol but gameplay was fun.

How's the tennis game? I always liked those for some reason.
