For me it's:

Image

The original Thief: The Dark Project.

The fear came not from the graphics (even for their time they were merely functional). The fear came from a combination of oppressive and ominous atmosphere punctuated by lurking horrific creatures, all combined with a sound engine that still has no equal today. The original Thief is a masterclass effort in creating horrific dread within the player that just keeps growing thicker. There's no jump-out-of-the-closet-boo! scares here. You often know well ahead of time that an undead ghoul or insane ghost is in your vicinity, you're just not sure exactly where they are. You just hear their scuffling, moaning, and frantic mumbling all around you, while you bumble through dark forgotten passageways doing your best not to attract their dire attention. Attracting their attention means you're going to have a bad, bad time. This is the only game I've ever played at night where sometimes I had to just stop and wait until daylight hours.

And yes, I've visited Thief 3's infamous Shalebridge Cradle, and that level (while awesome) does not hold a candle's dimming flicker to the majesty of the original Thief's Haunted Cathedral. There's a plaque on the door of the cathedral that reads:

Warning:
Great evil resides in this place, and it is no longer fit for men.
The doors are sealed to protect us from that which lies within.
Do not remain here.

A fitting description for the entire game, truly.

I get way too into scary games so I actually exhaust myself and don't get too far in them lol. I've started Fatal Frame II a couple of times (haven't found the first one yet) and have only played for an hour or so. Scary game for sure.

The original Alone in the Dark was scary in that it was a pretty new experience. Doom was scary as hell when it was new, and I actually thought Doom 3 was really scary. I agree with others as well about RE: It was really atmospheric and scary at the time.

Unfortunately some games don't hold up, but I think that's to be expected in this genre. I downloaded the original SH on PS3 and frankly the graphics are just so dated I just had no feeling playing it. Want to pick it up again at some point though. Eternal Darkness doesn't hold up on multiple playthroughs unfortunately. No big deal, I just felt like I was going through the motions the second time around. Guess that's the price of a game having a lot of originality.

Funny enough, I began playing this yesterday for the first time. Stealth games often take me a while to beat, as I can spend hours in a single level studying layouts and searching for secrets, so I've only beaten the training level(had to configure my controls somehow) and the first level where I take the sceptre. We'll see how it goes.

I really wish my DC liked this game. I'm saved right before the boss battle with that old man in the truck, but even though I've fought him enough times to be able to beat him without getting hit, my DC freezes when it tries to play the CG videos. It's a shame, I've got a lot of horror games on the DC that it just refuses to play properly, like Illbleed, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, etc. There are some great horror titles and a lot of solid ports there.

Fatal Frame 1 did a fine job of setting up an atmosphere of being alone, and forcing the players to look through an antique camera in order to see ghosts quickly coming to attack you created a lot of tense and startling moments.

I'd say that is the "scariest" game I played.

Close second would be an old Text Adventure game called- Lurking Horror that one really captured my dark imagination and I scared myself quite a few times playing it and visualizing my surroundings.

I remember on average Thief's levels took me about 2.5 hours to finish a piece. The levels are legit huge, but sprawling in a way that's well designed and fun to explore, rather than being a tedious walking simulator.
I've only beaten the training level(had to configure my controls somehow) and the first level where I take the sceptre.
The first level is by far the most rote (not that it isn't fun), the next mission you do is much more interesting. Shortly after that, you'll reach a mission named "Down In The Bonehoard"... and that one is where the game started blowing me away... and it just keeps getting better.

I guess I should mention Thief: The Dark Project is my favorite game of all time, so I might be a bit biased.

I mean, Slender is the only game that, even while very, very drunk, I refused to play, simply because it had left me in such a panic the previous time I played.

That said, I REALLY want to try Eternal Darkness, I hear it's amazing. Never heard of Fatal Frame, though.
Final Fantasy IX is the best one

I am noting joking when I say that, EVERY SINGLE HORROR GAME is the scariest game I've ever played. I am not one to scare easily. Haunted houses, horror films, horror books do not phase me in the slightest, but there is something about how games engage my brain that leave me unable to get anywhere in a horror game.

Even games like Resident Evil have been games that leave me in a room going, "I'm done..I have to take a break. I can't go into the next room."

I have just given up, but there is still hope in my wife. For her, those games she enjoys immensely. She gets spooked by them, but she is really really good at playing those types of games. She also does really well with Real Time Strategy games, another genre that I can't do.

Eternal Darkness was good, from what I played of it, though I never finished it. I got stuck on some kind of boss fight and could never figure out what I had to do. But if you enjoy horror games, you need to play the Fatal Frame games.

No worries, that seems to be the opinion of a lot of folks I know who played Thief. I admit, the first mission was impressive but also a bit bland. I blackjacked a lot of folks, with the exception of one guy I had to kill by the sword after accidentally quick-saving after he spotted me. I will keep playing and see how I feel about it.

I get scared playing any game, even non-horror games. The anticipation always psyches me out.

Slendorman was just terrible though, just nothing but dumb pop ups. Not really a scary game.

Hmmm really? I have the first one on SS & enjoyed it.
I know this D2 isn't a FMV game... the footage I've seen looks like a lot of running around in the snow.
