The Saturn's Surprising PC Port Library

Post by Ben »

So one of the things I remembered from another thread where Wizardy was brought up, was that the Saturn has actually become one of the best ways to play a lot of older PC games as Apple II, Win 3.1, Win 95, etc. hardware gets scarcer. The thing is, I remembered reading years ago that a lot of the US games had the keyboard and mouse support dropped for whatever reason, and I tried digging up a list of what JP games worked (and since a lot of them like Wizardry had an English option, would be the better way to go). Anyway, to my surprise, I found a pretty good one I thought I'd share: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/archive/in ... 12268.html

I remember reading a review of Duke Nukem 3D years ago where they said the 3D pad made it unplayable, if they only knew it could have had PC perfect controls.

I have Farland Story which is also on the PC. Pretty decent strategy RPG.

Thanks Bone, I'm a huge RPG and Saturn fan and never played that one, you made my day! Just out of curiostity, do you know if it works with the mouse and keyboard (I'll find it out when I pick it up one way or the other  ).

I should clarify that it's in Japanese.

I don't think it has keyboard support.

Nah, I'm a Japanese speaker, so it's all good. I just ask because nearly all of those Japanese PC ports use the keyboard and mouse, I'll post back if I end up getting it and they happen to work.

Wizardry having an English language option is news to me.
Are there any other Japanese games that are bilingual like that?

This is a good question that I don't know the answer to. If you scroll down, there's a thread I and others posted in listing games that can be played in English or at least don't require Japanese knowledge to play. Now, the thing here is that I have a huge Saturn import collection, but mostly I have rpgs, fighters, shmups and platformers.. So basically what I did was dig through my fighters, platformers and shmups for that thread (since RPGs are not playable in Japanese obviously). However, it is very possible more of these PC ports have that option (and possibly some other games, who knows). I am actually trying to round out my collection, and so if I get any other PC ports that have English as an option I wil be sure to post back and let people know. I've been buying import Saturn games since 95, I figure I may as well try and get all of the good ones at some point, and if I help people find more Saturn games to play all the better.

I just checked. Doesn't seem to have keyboard support. The mouse is used to click your units and whatnot, some may find it easier than using the controller.

There are three Farland games on Saturn, it's a decent series.

Thanks Bone, I really appreciate it. I think I have all of the traditional turn based JRPGs for the Saturn already, but some of these Japanese PC games that were released for the Saturn have still escaped me. Once I get ahold of it and start playing I'll be sure and let you know what I thought of it; it might be a little while since I just got a Wii U, although I'm mostly just counting down until X in regard to it anyway.

The SS port of Quake is legit. Took a beefy PC to run it back then. Great NIN soundtrack & looks like a lot of the lighting effects made it into the port.
