Yeah, it's a shame that modern FPS design doesn't really allow for this anymore. Perhaps why people feel a bit deflated after completing a COD or BF.

Doom 64 has been slightly put aside while I play FF9, but I did make it past the first Cyber-Demon. Even though it has some occasionally obtuse puzzles, this is fast becoming one of my fav N64 shooters. Like with Wave Race 64, I feel guilty I passed on this first time round for fancier fare like Turok 2.

I knew it was a bad idea, but I just HAD to go with the hooker in Riga. 8)
Grateful for checkpoint reloading there.
The sequel has a bit more exploration to it, but the franchise is a strictly linear affair. I take it you played STALKER and its sequels?
Not yet, but they're all sitting in my Steam backlog awaiting me...

Also, I saw that Last Light is going to be free for PS+ next month, so that's pretty good to know too.
STALKER is definitely what you're wanting. Far more exploration and openness.

I'm trying MOH: Pacific Assault again on a better machine than my laptop (i5 quad-core, NVIDIA GT 625, 8GB RAM). Looks and runs a hell of a lot better. It really feels more like a better experience now.

I got DOOM64 when it was released. I liked the game a lot because it was different from all the DOOM ports. But I didn't like how damn dark it was and wasn't there a dumb password system for saves?

Aye, it has a 16 character password for each level and difficulty. I prefer this over some games though that use the memory pak as the batteries on those seem to go all the time.

Most games I owned on the N64 had the backup in the cart. I think Mario Kart 64 was the only one i owned (that I can remember) using the memory pak for time trial times. It was weird to me that DOOM 64 didn't do something similar. Maybe they were trying to save money on cart production? I just remember it not being fun to put in the save passwords.

At the time it seemed outdated, but on the long-term, the system is probably better for SNES games. That battery is going to die at some point.

Shadowman and Forsaken 64 both used the memory card for saves. I remember because I rented Shadowman once and had to then run out and buy a memory card because I didn't realize I needed one to save. And Forsaken was the only one I owned that needed a memory card, and the memory card I had was kinda shitty and started dropping the Forsaken save.

Quest64 also used one, if I recall correctly.

GEEZE! Looks like 189 games used the memory card. Doom64 was 1 of 3 w/PW only.

Games with internal: 79
Games with memory card: 189

Oh, wow. Thanks for posting this Jag. So more games use the controller pak than don't it seems. Pretty large list of bad games that don't save at all.
