My Life with SEGA short films getting a VCD release

Post by Barry the Nomad »

Hi all! I wanted to spread the word on a project I'm working on with AJ Rosa of the SEGAbits video series "My Life with SEGA". For those who don't know his stuff, AJ reviews SEGA games from the past to the present (though, mainly the past). Every so often he'll make an event episode in the form of a short film which ties into a game review. Last year's "The Next Level" was Panzer Dragoon Saga, this year's "No Limits" is an upcoming Virtual-On review.

We wanted to do something special with this one, so instead of the usual DVD (which is to come later), we chose to create a VCD release playable on the SEGA Saturn and Dreamcast. The disc is to include extended cuts of his two films, as well as reviews of the Saturn's Panzer Dragoon games including Saga, and the aforementioned Virtual-On.

We'll have release details later this year, but I thought I'd share it with you all now. :)

"No Limits" is ready to be viewed online here:

Very cool idea!

The SS VCD cards can get pricey. If you have a boot disc, your DC will run this. Also, most older DVD players. Look for the CD logo but it'll say "digital video" above it. These will run video CDs.

VCD cards are going for a lot of money.

This one started at a dollar and just went for $46:

I don't even see a name on it or anything. Could be a generic for all I know.

I imported my VCD card from Hong Kong for $30. There are about a dozen different versions. They all have slightly different functions but all play the movies.

Cheaper to hunt a DVD player or DVD/VHS combo with either of the logos below (near where it has the DVD, Dolby, etc logos). I see them often @ goodwill. VCDs are simply MPEG1 files, almost all CD ROM drives in PCs will run them as well.

I enjoy the niche format & its history. Coolest VCD item I own is the official Star Wars release. Not too many official movies were released outside the CDi movies (which are also VCDs, just stay away from the few marked "digital video movies" as these are CDi proprietary). SW Trilogy, Back to the Future trilogy, & LOTR Fellowship of the Ring all saw VCD releases not under Phillips CDi branding/line.

Any tips on finding one now? I don't mind buying from Hong Kong and waiting for shipping, as long as it is a good price.

I just want one from my Saturn. It feels incomplete lol. It's how I felt before I got the RumblePak for my Dreamcast controllers.
