Hmm, so far Ryo is only confirmed for the iOS and android versions of the game, although it also seems he's in the steam version too. Which is kind of annoying, what with him being a resolutely console character.

Real talk: I prefer cameo stuff like this over sequels.

Has Ryo ever been in virtua fighter? Doesn't that seem like the most obvious thing to do with him? Or a cameo in Yakuza.

He hasn't been in any Virtua Fighter, but it would be cool if they brought him in.

On that note, I was seriously hoping he'd show up with the Virtua Fighter guests in Dead or Alive 5/Ultimate. Its a shame he didn't, it was a good opportunity.

I would love a cameo in Yakuza or Virtua Fighter. It seems like a huge missed opportunity they haven't done that yet, actually.

And yeah, I heard Ryo is only going to be in the iOS and Android versions. It's seriously lame!

Has anyone considered Sega's acquisition of Atlus to be a factor in this? I mean, it might not be Shenmue, but Atlus is a company for the hardcore fans, and they *do* have permission to pick up any of Sega's dormant IP's.

Doubt they'd let them pick up such a money pit project. I love these games (heck, I even imported the PAL.DC Shenmue II) but I just don't see it making them money.

It seems like to us that it has a huge following & it'd get a lot of buzz in our circles but not sure the ROI is there. No joke, I think we'd see another Panzer Dragoon RPG from Atlas before we saw a Shenmue III....hope we see both though :)

I never understood how Yakuza is even related to Shenmue. After playing the first two, the only comparison I can come across is that you can fight other people and that Japan is a set piece. Even the combat itself is vastly differently.

Not to say Yakuza is bad or anything. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two and do want to get around playing the others, but I do not see the comparison.

I never got it either. I guess it's the fact Yakuza too has RPG and adventure elements mixed with physical combat. Otherwise, the two series have little in common at all.

But yay, Yakuza 5 being localised is good news! Hope it's true.

IIRC, they had several of the same devs & Wikipedia doesn't lie:

Legacy
The franchise's mixed gameplay is inherited from past Sega games including, the Shenmue series, the Virtua Fighter series, the SpikeOut series and the Jet Set Radio series. Explicit tribute is paid to these games through product placement of Virtua Fighter 4, Virtua Fighter 5 and SpikeOut arcade cabinets in Yakuza Club Sega game centers (the latters were first introduced in Shenmue) and cameo appearances (like Goji Rokkaku from Jet Grind Radio).

The Yakuza gameplay resembles the one introduced in Shenmue in many respects including Event Mode, Adventure Mode, Battle Mode, minigames and QTEs.

Yeah, I do kind of get that. It's just the two series do feel really, really different to one another in my opinion.
