I've been playing the Android version of this lately. I love the battle system. Each battle matchup can easily be made uneven though, so if you don't do side quests and use the shops, you're pretty much screwed. Great game nonetheless.

Hero's Saga: Laevatein Tactics

Picked this one up on the cheap, new. Looks fun although I'm not sure I can pronounce it :)

I realize this thread is a few months old, but I missed it. Anyway, to Jagosaurus, I highly and strongly recommend you get a PSP. You can get one cheap now. There are a LOT of strategy RPGs for the platform:

I mean, the glorious SRPG Tactics Ogre for PSP is worth the price of admission alone. Not to mention the Growlanser game. I am currently playing Metal Gear AC!D for the first time and loving it, for another example. But the primary reason I suggest getting a PSP for SRPGs though, is so you can have access to Valkyria Cronicles parts II & III (the first game is on PS3). Those games use a combat system called BLiTZ, and it's a blast. BLiTZ is the coolest most fun combat system I've seen in SRPGs in many years. Valkyria Chronicles II had an official English release, and recently Valkyria Chronicles III had an English fan translation patch made available. If you truly love SRPGs you need BLiTZ in your veins!

As for platforms you already have, since you have a DS, don't miss this game:

I finished both campaigns and loved all 38 hours of it.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I just skimmed this thread and thought I'd throw in a game that I didn't see mentioned (if it was, I apologize). Kartia (in Japan Rebus) for the PSX. It was done by Atlus and had artwork by Yoshitaka Amano (of early Final Fantasy fame of course). You can beat it in 30 hours no problem, your characters top out at level 20 and there are no random battles, it's entirely linear. It has a lot of drawbacks, the graphics were not very good for the time (and the opening maps in particular don't show off the detail the later ones will have, you can tell Atlus were still getting the hang of 3D at the time). It's the quality of the story, the artwork, and the memorable characters that really make it stand out for me though, and the battle system is actually fairly involved with the creation of phantoms (basically monsters that do your bidding). It also had an excellent soundtrack and one of the better translations for the time (how it got a nearly perfect one and Square messed up Final Fantasy Tactics so badly I'll never know  ).

So, I don't know, most people don't care for it but I'm a huge fan, and it's really cheap and can be beaten in 30 hours easy if you skip the extra stuff so it's not like you'll waste your life on it.
