Seventh Generation Cult Classics

Post by prfsnl_gmr »

Game Informer is currently running an article listing games released during the seventh console generation (360/PS3/Wii) that it considers to be "cult" classics. Based on my reading of the article, it define games that are "cult" classics as games that: (1) were released on consoles or PC (i.e., no hanheld or mobile games); (2) are or were generally ignored by most video game players upon release (i.e., games that did not quickly meet or exceed sales expectations, games that most video game players no longer play, etc.); (3) received less than overwhelming critical acclaim; and - most importantly - (4) have a relatively small, dedicated fan base willing to argue the game's merits passionately.

Game Informer's list includes:

Alan Wake (360/PC)
Bayonettta (360/PS3)
College Hoops 2K8 (360/PS3)
Deadly Premonition (360/PC/PS3)
Demon's Souls (PS3)
Earth Defense Force 2017 (360)
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron (360/PS3)
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (360/PS3)
Metro 2033 (360)
Mirror's Edge (360/PS3)
Nier (360/PS3)
No More Heroes (PS3/WII)

I am fascinated by games and movies with "cult" followings, and this is a remarkably strong list considering the source. The games, which were listed alphabetically in the article, cut off at No More Heroes, however, and I was left wondering if the magazine discarded half of the article. Accordingly, I must rely on the Racketboy community to fill in the gaps.

So...what other games would you consider seventh generation "cult" classics?

EDIT:

3D Dot Heroes might be a good example.

Vanquish is an excellent example. Devil May Cry meets Gears of War.

I think that these are all great picks - especially 3D Dot Game Heroes and Brutal Legend - and I have added them to the OP.

I'd say splatterhouse, never heard much of it... then again people only get excited when a new FIFA or PES is released.

I've heard Asura's Wrath is excellent, over-looked game. I've yet to verify that for myself though. Sitting in shrinkwrap under my TV.

Let's show the Wii some love:
The Conduit
Mad World

Anyone agree? Both under the radar in the big scheme of the generation.

You know, I wanted to say S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but I guess that was too popular to make this list.

How about Shadows of the Damned, Alpha Protocol, Way of the Samurai 3, or the Darkness series?

I'd second Shadows and Darkness.
