Sega CD & Saturn Case Difference

Post by Jagosaurus »

So today I was "Frankenstein-ing" together the cases for Sega CD & SS games. Essentially making sure the better games had nicer cases.

Well, I noticed the pins/hinges are wider on the SS cases. The front lids for the SS cases do not fit into the SCD backs. I always assumed they were identical, interesting. This means they actually remanufactured these cases for the SS (with slightly different hinges/lids) & they weren't simply SCD left overs.

Check your cases & make sure I'm not crazy. I checked 15 games. Now the SCD lids fit the SS backs, just not vice versa.

You are correct, they are not exactly the same. I found out the same way you did. A little bit of a bummer, and certainly a strange business decision to pay for new molds that are so similar.

Yeah they are different.

I don't mind cracked cases anymore. It is what it is. Can't expect stuff that old to be in pristine condition.

Yea, but it would have been cool if they made them like the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive cases. I still have some of my cases from childhood in great condition, and I never even tried to take care of them.

I have Saturn games that come in both types of cases.

Is it possible those with smaller hinges were changed out at some point or are you original owner?

This is why I love NTSC-J Saturn games so much, that and the price.

They aren't exactly the same, but afaik the inserts should work in either one. So you can swap a messy Saturn case for a pristine Sega CD case, etc. You just can't swap parts between the different types.

Most of my SAT/SCD cases are in pretty decent shape, save for the hinges being broken on a couple of them (I swapped around so that those cases were on my least favorite games).

I really do love the look of those cases when they're in nice shape, btw.

I won't disagree that they look great when in nice shape. Mine stand out on my shelves big time:
