Customizing A Sega Saturn Cartridge

Post by Mad_Hatter »

Has anyone ever customized a Saturn cartridge? It would be the Action Replay in my case. This thing is so ugly sticking out of a Black USA Saturn.

I was just thinking of spray panting it black and putting my own sticker on there.

Has anyone ever done this or have some tips?
- Anyone got the Saturn Cart sticker dimensions on hand?

If it's not worth it, I might just buy a 4MB Cart Capcom Cart and use it's housing for the Action Replay, since I like the Capcom Cart appearance the best.

In case you had any doubts, I had mine set up like that for a few years, and it does fit without any issues.

You can buy a black AR cart. Or you can put the AR board inside another black cart casing. I've seen a few other types of 3rd party carts use the same AR cart design.

I've never customized an AR cart but I did put an official backup cart board inside an official 4M RAM cart casing and took off the 4M RAM sticker, since they never made an official clear color backup cart for the skeleton Saturn.

SS Game shark is black. Allows for codes, saving, & imports - not 1/4 RAM though IIRC.

Also destroys your cart slot since the PCB is too thick.

Or you could just solder the PCB straight into the Saturn...

I've done pretty much exactly that with SNES carts a few times.

Use Krylon Fusion Black Satin and follow the directions on the can. Practice your spraying on some junk first if you need the practice. Krylon Fusion is boss, if you follow the directions perfectly, your result will be something that looks legit (I've shown pics of my black SNES carts before and some one said it looked like a Killer Instinct cart lol). It's important to use the Satin sheen, if you use a gloss it'll come out looking like shit.

As for the label, just measure the dimensions with a ruler or whatever. Use Photoshop or Gimp or whatever. Print out your label on the "draft" setting to make sure the size is perfect. Then get something like this to print your new label with: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51MgQGnB1EL.jpg

You could try and tape the label off before spraying, but to get the best results you would wanna remove the old label before spraying then use a new one.

edit: I just measured my label and got 2.812" x 1.812" but again, print drafts of your label until you're sure the size is perfect.

Nice. Thanks Ziggy.

Awesome SNES cart btw. You even got the curved label down. :)
