True. There is a common misconception about this. Many consumers believe they need a "digital antenna" to pull in digital signals. Many antennas are actually marketed as being "digital antennas", but any antenna will do the trick. You need a newfangled digital tuner, but a twenty-five-year-old antenna will work just as well today as it ever has. If you like DIY projects, you can even make an antenna. It's surprisingly simple.CRTGAMER wrote: Of note you do not need a TV Antennae labeled specific for Digital HD, any set of rabbit ears or even a roof antennae will work.

Its the difference in how the data is sent. HD is sent in packets, so it is a binary system, you either get it or you dont.BurningDoom wrote:I hate that when the signal is low that the entire show start freezing. Before digital, if it happened, the screen got a little fuzzy but you could still see, and it wasn't that big of deal.
...dang it's been so long since I haven't had cable & DVR. Well over a decade.
I am glad this is working for yall, what receivers did yall end up getting? While I have access to some streaming channels via work I am still missing PBS.

I ended up with the RCA. Like I said, my internet research showed this was one of the best ones to get out the mass-market models. Even if not, it was the only one Wal-Mart had left, and Best Buy had none. Pretty basic set-up and remote control. But luckily the remote can also work the T.V. itself. And it has a program guide, which I didn't expect.fastbilly1 wrote:I am glad this is working for yall, what receivers did yall end up getting? I get much more channels that I did the last time I didn't have cable (long before the digital switch). Back then all I got was 1 version of ABC, PBS, and CBS.
Now I get multiple verions (usually 2-3) of the following channels:
-ABC
-CBS
-NBC
-FOX
-The CW
-MyTV (Used to be UPN back in the day)
-Me TV (A classic T.V. show network, like Nick at Night used to be, kind of cool since my cable didn't carry this channel, this is a new one for me. And it's much more "classic" than Nick At Night is nowadays.)
-PBS
-PBS Kids (or whatever it's called)
-A local network access channel that will never be watched
-Some boring church channels.
And I still have my streaming option on Netflix through my Wii. At least Nintendo hasn't cut that from Wii services, yet.

So when you guys say "receiver" are you referring to an antenna or a digital to analog converter box? A bit confused there when you mentioned the remote, makes me think DTA box.
I've been considering a digital to analog convert box for my older tru flat CRT. I saw some very nice DTA converter boxes with component out.

So I can connect an antenna like the one below to my LCD with a built in digital tuner with no issues and no box required?

I have rabbit ears hooked up to my Samsung plasma in the living room and getting 30+ channels. Quality is good some channels coming in @1080i but reception can go in and out on occasion unless set in a "sweet spot".
With Antenna and streaming, cable is a huge waste of money that you can use for games.

Re: Digital TV Signal - Quality, How Many Channels?
We did this in August. Bought a $50 roof antenna and have similar channels as BruningDoom.
We went from $130 for tv, net and phone to $50 for internet and netflix.
If you have a modern console check out playon. It costs $50 for a lifetime subscription and it acts as a fronted to all streaming sites. This way you don't have to browse to ABC.com (etc) to load a video on your computer and put it into full screen, playon gets rid of the pc interface.
Sports, mlb and nba, are the problem for me, other than that I am quite happy with out decision.

I couldn't agree more. We have cable + a DVR box until our promo runs out in 9 months. When it runs out I won't be shedding any tears. I still have Netflix, Amazon, and a high gain antenna on the roof for HD OTA. Pound for pound, cable is freaking garbage.TEKTORO wrote:With Antenna and streaming, cable is a huge waste of money that you can use for games.

Analog antennae with a digital converter, in my case.Jagosaurus wrote:So when you guys say "receiver" are you referring to an antenna or a digital to analog converter box? A bit confused there when you mentioned the remote, makes me think DTA box.

I have the Mohu Leaf Ultimate (I live in a rural area, it's necessary), and I'm pleased with it, I get almost every channel I need and combined with all of the streaming services we have, we're saving easily $60 per month since cancelling DirecTV.
