And if the name causes personal offense to some and has demonstrable racist origins and connotations, I can't see any good arguments from anyone else to the contrary for keeping it. What value is there in keeping such a name that at least some groups have repeatedly stated is derogatory? Just because other native americans don't care or like the name, that somehow makes it no longer derogatory to the group who asked for the change?

Almost anything can cause personal offense these days. Intent goes a long way. They named these teams so in order to pay homage to a culture, not to be derogatory towards them. How can you disregard possibly an equal amount of people who want it to stay because they feel it keeps their culture relevant and gives it attention.

They could just as easily use a Native American inspired name that doesn't also, you know, carry derogatory connotations.

I guess I've not seen anything approaching substantive support from native american groups for keeping the name as a way to honor their culture. I've seen plenty to the contrary. I'm sure many don't care. But not caring about it isn't the same as thinking it's a fantastic, noble, respectful nickname.

I think the teams should show more respect to the indigenous people for whom they are named. Florida State has shown that you can honor a tribe instead of insulting the tribe. In 2005, Florida State successfully defended their team name. The NCAA agreed and granted them an exception.

What's preventing professional teams from showing the same respect that this college team shows?

There is also historical tradition with these team names. They were so named before rampant political correctness has taken over.

The Cleveland Indians baseball team was founded in 1894 before men of different races played in the same league. The point is that baseball has changed. Tradition is not an excuse for racism.

It was never said to be noble or fantastic. Thankfully that is not a requirement to become a team name.

As much as I hate "Political Correctness" changing everything around us, I voted Yes since the label does seem derogatory to a group of people. Does not matter if it only affects a small percentage of the population if it is perceived as a racial slur.

This reminds me when I was in the Navy, we always wondered why the less glamorous Oiler ships have Indian Names compared to Destroyers and Carriers.
