Re: Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?
Some context for non-Americans would be nice, so here's an infortmative article:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24027457
As I always say being overly politically correct, striffles all room for debate and ends up
A) Creating a lot of unseen frustration
B) Take away attention from the root of the problem (this is in general, not on this specific case).
So I vote no out of principal and also because I think focusing on something small like this is silly, when there are bigger issues native americans should be fighting for/discussing.

I don't think this is a question the average person has enough knowledge about to give a good answer.
We are raised to not really look at what happened with the Native Americans in detail. It is something intentionally blurred and trivialized. Many people are so detached from the issue that they do not realize it was a somewhat recent event in our short history and happened after the Civil War. I would wager that most do not really know what kind of weight the term "redskin" really holds, or how offensive it is or isn't to Native Americans today or in the past. I personally don't, so I consider myself not able to provide a worthy answer to this. Even with just the few replies here in this thread, it is obviously being looked at in a dismissive manner and being considered "too PC". Would the same be said if we were discussing the term "nigger" and a football helmet with a black guy on it?
An extreme example with an obvious answer, but my point is to illustrate the fact that most Americans don't really know or care how offensive the term "redskin" is as opposed to many other derogatory terms. If it is something that a group of people take serious offense to, then yes, I think it is quite reasonable to make the football team change their name. If it's a situation where an issue is being created just for the sake of it, then I can see why people would resist it.

Local university here used to have "Indians" as their mascot, and there was a successful push to change it a while back.
People had the usual objections at first, but now I don't think anybody actually misses it or anything. Overall a positive outcome.

Part of the reason I believe the name hasn't already been changed is that the loudest voices for the change are irate Native Americans who use such examples, and don't want just the Redskins to change their name, but also the Chiefs, the Seminoles, the Blackhawks, Arrow head stadium, etc.
Also there are plenty of American Indians who embrace the term. Even on Navajo land there is a high school whose mascot is The Redskins (complete with logo).
Personally, I think if John Wayne was still around he'd ask the NFL to banish Rowdy.

I think Native Americans have every right to be offended, but I also think a business owner can name his team whatever he wants to. The 'Skins have one hell of a loyal fanbase, and the slur isn't hurting ticket sales.
That said a name change would mean new uniforms and logos, which would increase merchandise sales.
Re: Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?
I would be interested in hearing why you think this. To me, a racial slur is a racial slur. If there are Native Americans that get as offended by the term redskin as black people would get offended by the term nigger, what is different there?Luke wrote:Apples and oranges.brunoafh wrote: Would the same be said if we were discussing the term "nigger" and a football helmet with a black guy on it?
