PS2 Memory Card Slot Clarification

Post by Jagosaurus »

So I think I know the answer to this, but want to make sure it isn't just my console.

Is memory card slot 2 on a PS2 only for copying data over and managing data? In other words, a game cannot read save data from slot 2 - only slot 1?

I keep an official PS2 and official PS1 mem card in my PS2 for safe keeping. It is a tad annoying to switch the corresponding card around to slot 1 depending on if I am playing PS1 or PS2 titles. Pretty sure it is across the board that for a game to read the save data, it needs to be in slot 1. Can you guys confirm. Thanks.

I know... I am lazy and grumpy

It depends on the game. Some games can utilize the second memory card slot just like the first, though often only the first one is used and that's where autoloading tends to happen.

Interesting. Thanks man! Now you have me wanting to test them all out lol. Guess I'll keep on switching the mem cards around when needed. At least now I know it's not my system.

Autosaving games nearly always require your card to be in slot 1. I get that, but couldn't the developers put something in the options menu? I get tired of switching my cards whenever I want to play Soulcalibur. It's not that much trouble, but I shouldn't have to do it.

RPGs and other manual-saving games tend to allow both slots, as they should. I usually still use slot 1 - these games have a menu where slot 1 is automatically highlighted, and you must push "down" to select slot 2. I tend to just hit save and mash the X button because I want to get back to the game.

Why didn't anyone ever do this: "Press X to save in slot 1, pres /\ to save in slot 2"
