I think the 'walk straight to the boss without a dungeon' part is key, and I can't think of many games that were like that.
One that does come to mind is Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, god I missed that boss music:

Help recalling an RPG!

If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?
Re: Help recalling an RPG!
The only other detail that's popped into my head as I keep trying to picture it is that the boss spawns facing the screen, meaning it's got a combat system of either a Dragon Warrior or Phantasy Star where your party is either not on the screen (as in Dragon Warrior), or they're on the bottom of the screen facing up (like Phantasy Star). That'll probably help narrow it down more.
Are there any RPGs that have a bird's eye view while navigating (like Dragon Warrior, Phantasy Star, Unmentionable series, etc.) but that top down combat perspective?

I would also place my $ on a PS game.
The long corridors and music softening are a series staple. I always turn around, level up a bit, & heal bc I know a boss is coming LOL!

I thought 7th Saga too, at first. The final dungeon is definitely not a straight line though.
Final boss looks like this:

@Bone, Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. 7th Saga fits everything but the straight line to the bone. That last dungeon for that game was a pain

Re: Help recalling an RPG!
Sorry thought I had posted a while ago. No, it wasn't 7th Saga. That was a good guess though. I have never beaten it though unfortunately. I've also ruled out both Lufia games and FF: Mystic Quest so far. Since it's got to had a combat engine like either Dragon Warrior or Phantasy Star it rules out a lot more. Also can't be an import, I got my games from Video Outlet and Funcoland back in the day (I was a young'un), so nothing in Japanese.

Have we established a certain system yet? Do you recall what you played this game on?
Re: Help recalling an RPG!
It's either SNES or Genesis. The only NES RPGs I had ever played back then were Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior.

I hate to even bring it up, but could it be Secret of the Stars? There is a throne and a final boss that looks Dark Force-ish...
If not, how about Paladin's Quest?
