Wii reccomendations?

Post by r0bot j0nes »

I picked up a Wii last weekend after hearing how easy it is to mod it for emulation, and seeing how cheap used Wii's have become since the Wii U was released.

My girl wants to get into gaming, but she's not very adept at anything "complicated" and is pretty casual, so I want to nab her some mini-game collections and shooting games for us to play together. I nabbed a couple of simple titles like Carnival Games and Game Party, but I see that most mini-game collections are shovelware.

What are some decent mini-game collections for the Wii?

And as for me....

Are games like The Conduit and GoldenEye 007 still popular online? I wanna nab those with a Wii Zapper. Any other arcades shooters like HOTD worth recommending?

Wii Party is actually quite a bit of fun despite the twee graphics.

Other than that of course Mario Party 9.

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is god tier. Acquire it as soon as humanly possible.

If you strictly mean first person style shooting, definitely get RE: Umbrella Chronicles and RE: Darkside Chronicles. And absolutely don't miss Dead Space Extraction, it's the best on rails FPS for the Wii. If you want a laugh give Ghost Squad a try if you can get it for $5. Worth it for the bikinis and dolphin guns (you'll see).

Isn't she into 2D platformers? New Super Mario Bros Wii, Kirby's Epic Yarn, ect. should be right up her alley.

Good choice on the Wii. It is a great system, and now is a great time to be buying games for it...especially if you like arcade shooters like HOTD.

I heartily recommend:

Ghost Squad
Gunblade N.Y. & L.A. Machineguns
HOTD 2 & 3 Return
HOTD: Overkill
LoZ: Link's Crossbow Training ($0.50 at Gamestop!)
RE: Darkside Chronicles
RE: Unbrella Chronicles

If you enjoy your light gun games covered in cheese, I also recommend:

Mad Dog McCree Gunsluinger's Pack
Target Terror

Finally, I am curious about, but have not played:

Attack of the Movies 3D
Dino Strike
Gunslingers
Martian Panic
Nerf N-Strike
Wild West Shootout

Does anyone have any thoughts on these?

I actually beat this one with some other people. The interesting thing about it is it offers up to 4 player simultaneous co-op. It's not amazing by any means, but it was a decent western themed shooter with enough variety to stay entertaining until we finished it. I remember we beat it in one night so it's not very long. I'd say if you see it for $10 it's worth getting but not worth more than that.

Check out Mad World.

Play it after your kiddo hits the hay though.

If you're going to be doing on-rail shooters, you have to get a pair of these:

You can dual wield them and play as both 1P/2P!
The official Wii Zapper is pretty meh, IMO.

It's a slippery slope! I bought a Wii a few years ago just for a few choice titles, and then I found out it's probably the most underrated console ever. I mean there are a LOT of good-to-great titles that got missed by the average gamer due to the shovelware piles on top of them.

Here are a just few more to look into if you're bored sometime:

JRPGS:
Arc Rise Fantasia
Opoona
FFCC: The Crystal Bearers
(Got middling reviews but I had a ton of fun with it.)

FPS:
The Conduit 2
Red Steel 2

Survival Horror:
Cursed Mountain
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Fragile Dreams
Escape From Bug Island
(I may be the only person who actually bought this.)

RTS:
Battalion Wars 2
Little King's Story

Flying:
The Sky Crawlers (Made by the folks behind the Ace Combat series.)

Platforming:
Lost In Shadow
The Kore Gang

Adventure:
Trauma Center series (Seriously great games not to be missed.)
Zack & Wiki

And a game that I enjoyed that no one ever talks about:

Deadly Creatures
Be a tarantula or a scorpion and kill many things.

Those games are just a tiny bit of what's out there for the Wii. The Wii's got a pretty nice library of highly decent titles hidden beneath the bargain bin waggle crud. I own over 100 Wii titles personally and only a dozen or so are even first party Nintendo developed ones... the rest are all third party efforts. I think in years to come gamers will realize the Wii was actually a bastion of innovative fun after all, and there will be a revived interest in its library. I'm just glad I bought all my stuff when it was still cheap due to the "lol dust off my Wii" hivemind.
