This is Houston. There are no basements, only underground pools that someone foolishly thought they might try making a basement.
 Whups, I forgot about the different house set ups in Texas due to the water table.

I still stand by my statement though, the expense to make a good protective garage is fairly high. I did it solely due to the fact I work on my vehicles a lot so it made sense. I'm not sure how large the OP's collection is, but there has got to be some space to store it inside the house.

He's right. I've known of one house & one business in South East TX with basements. One of which was filled with water (home alone wet bandits style) in the wake of Hurricane Rita in 2006.

What about bed raisers (fit under casters & raise bed a foot or so) & under bed bins stacked You can fit A TON!

What about tornado cellars?

Games would be safe from tornados there! :) Put in a dehumidifier & store games in one. Man cave... literally lol.

Nah, we don't have cellars on the Texas coast. Those become more prominent as you go north towards tornado alley & you're higher above see level. They taught us to go to the bathtub with a bed mattress lol, no optimal tornado protection. The town I am originally from, (not to morbid), they have to sink caskets bc you can't dig 6 feet without hitting water. Different world near Houston although most ppl picture west Texas landscape. It's called the Bayou City... heat & 100% humidity (or a flooded basement lol) can ruin a collection.

Buckets of Damp Rid or a dehumidifier. But then you have to worry about the heat.

I recommend water tight containers in a storage closet in your house that still has temperature control. Find a small corner to hook up what you're playing.

Seriously, don't put it in the garage.

Man, these humidity fears are really making me want to leave my entire collection in Pennsylvania when I move to Texas, where I can't play it but at least it will be safe. I probably am abandoning the disc based games for now anyway.

Thankfully my girlfriend understands that if she told me to get rid of my collection or put it in the garage I would not be moving to Texas with her.

I'm going to miss basements. And occasionally being cold.

Not to thread hijack but since my situation is related:

How much danger are cartridges and discs actually in, with regards to high humidity (I have been there many times before, I have felt the soupy hell you people call "weather" so I understand what East Texas is like)? I may just leave the disc games behind for now since I'm pressed for space at the moment anyway.

I am definitely leaving the consoles behind and will settle for the Retron 5 when it comes out.

Heat's not really an issue. Electronics can tolerate heat just fine. Humidity is a much bigger issue. I think the vacuum space bags inside a rubbermaid bin with dessicant packed around it would be a fine solution.

Good point about the dessicant. Silica packets, or clay packets, would be HIGHLY advised in your containers.

Whew! I am glad to hear that! I have some of my 2600 and NES games in my attic at the moment. It is bone-dry up there, but the temperatures can get pretty high during the summer.

(The games are stored in sealed bins w/ desicant, BTW.)
