It checks for the required amount of RAM in the same way the official 4M card would, as far as I'm aware. Both the official 4M card and the AR will produce those issues that I mentioned with certain games that use the 1M RAM card.

I'll update this post with a list of RPGs in a bit, but they would almost exclusively require knowledge of Japanese. I'll get a list together for you anyway, just in case that isn't an issue.

EDIT 1:
thekirbster wrote:Do not forget the three Lunar games.
Not sure if you were aware that Lunar Complete is exactly the same game as Lunar Silver Star Story, aside from requiring the MPEG card for enhanced video quality in the cutscenes.

EDIT 2:
Generally these are not the best on the system, and there are more that I haven't included which are subjectively worse games. These are the ones I, personally, think are worth my or others' time.
AnEarth Fantasy Stories
Baroque (Depending on how strict your definition RPG is, but available more readily in English on other consoles)
Blue Breaker (a bit of text adventure dating sim mixed in)
Blue Seed
Cyber Doll
Dark Savior
Densetsu no Ogre Battle
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Dragon Slayer: Eiyuu Densetsu I & II
Dragon Master Silk
Eiyuu Shigan - Gal Act Heroism

Linda Cube
Linkle Liver Story
Madou Monogatari
Marica
Mahou Gakuen Lunar
Mahou Tsukai ni Naru Houhou
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari (I've played through this game, and I wouldn't call it an RPG, but the case says otherwise, so--.)
Phantasy Star Collection (PS 1-4)
Princess Crown
Princess Quest
Riglord Saga (ie Blazing Heroes)
Riglord Saga 2
Ronde
Sakura Taisen
Sakura Taisen 2
Senken Kikyouden

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (Sega Saturn) is the remake of Lunar: The Silver Star for the Sega CD.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (Sega Saturn) is the remake of Lunar: Eternal Blue for the Sega CD.

Lunar Magic School is the remake of Lunar Walking School for the Sega Game Gear.

Those are the THREE Lunar Games I am referring to. They are all in Japanese. I am getting Magic School just to collect it. I am a huge Lunar fan.

By the way, you happen to know anyone on the forum that can mod a Saturn to play CD-Rs would you? I looked around and it seems that some have moved on from doing it. That is the only mod I need.
Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers, Chrono Chross, Lunar: Silver Star SC, 2: Eternal Blue Complete, Lunar SS Harmony, and Skies of Arcadia(Legends, too).

Are there any good RPGs (all kinds) you can recommend me? Send me a PM!

Ah, I should have realized you were including Gakuen Lunar. Just to clarify, there are two versions of Silver Star Story for the Saturn--a standard version, and a "Complete" version that is unplayable without the MPEG card--and only one version of Lunar 2 - Eternal Blue.

I installed the modchip on one of my Saturns myself. If it's a model 2 Saturn, it's usually a very simple mod, and there are tons of threads and guides for installing and troubleshooting here. To answer your question specifically: No, I'm not sure who, if anyone, installs them as a service.

I knew that they were two versions of Silver Star Story. Big difference in video. It's a shame that no one has yet translated Magic School like they did Walking school for the Game Gear. I have read that there are a few differences between the two main different versions (Lunar 1 and 2 PSX to SS comparison) of Lunar. Better music, slightly different dungeons (and number), and some slightly different scenes. Didn't Luna and Alex kiss in the Sega Saturn version when compared to the PSX version? I cannot remember.

I read around the forums a bot and found a user that has a really good history in different modding. Snowkitty - Can you tell me what you know about them?

I have the JVC RG-VC20 video CD card. If you Google Saturn VCD cards, theres a grid out there of the different functions & region capabilities by device.

Keep in mind you'll need an AR cart if using on US console.

Fits very snug, little room left. It also fits tightly into mother board so I hated to remove it. About the size of 6 or 7 credit cards stacked on top of each other.

Thanks, that tells me some more about VCD cards. Anybody know a good list of games that fall into separate categories that I have listed below? I mean games that haven't been listed as the "Games that Defined the Saturn" or "Hidden Gems of the Saturn" here. I would like for the region to be listed as well. I do not mind what region the games was released in.

RPGs (more than the list above)
SHMUPs
Platformers (like Rayman)
Racing
Fighting

Any other good gem that is not listed in this category.

I will be going on vacation and I will not get back by the 7th of August. So I will not be able to respond to here.

I got a little confused reading this thread.

1) Will the AR 4 in 1 not work for games that need just an extra 1MB of RAM instead of 4?

2) Do the MPEG cards only work for certain regions? I was thinking about buying one once i get a US model 2 Saturn.

3) Was the OP strictly referring to those MPEG video cards strictly made for playing full motion video? Or was he also referring to the graphics cards that actually render the gameplay?

4) I believe King of Fighters 95 is the only game that is unplayable on a highly modded US console. But if you backup the game and convert it to US format, is it still unplayable?

AR 4 in 1 attempts to play 1MB games. There may be glitches.
(same for PAL games. US console runs them 60hz normally)

MPEG cards were sold in Japan or PAL format. AR can trick US systems.

King of Fighters 95 only specific need is its cartridge.
Patched backup is OK, or region mod for the original disc.
Lum fan.
