Etrian Odyssey IV - Tell Me About It

Post by Jagosaurus »

Highly considering this game. I might pickup the Atlus run that was limited edition with OST off eBay. I haven't played the others but hear it stands alone fine. I know it's long & a grind feast. Have you guys enjoyed it?

I have not played any of the series, but since the series was developed by Atlus, it does share some gameplay style with other dungeon crawler RPGs that Atlus worked on earlier. SMT: Strange Journey is a bit similar, but I never bother to finished it.

Jeremy Parish (1up/IGN) and Kimberly Wallace (RPGfan/Game Informer) are fans of the series, you could check up their reviews.

Nope. Sold my copy a while back. There's a demo on the eshop if you want to try it out though.

The cd isn't good either. Not worth paying extra for the LE.

It definitely stands alone; you don't need to play the previous games to appreciate the fourth. In fact, each game stands alone from a storyline perspective; what is the same between the titles is the general mechanics of the dungeon exploration and your classes. The story gets better with each iteration, but it's kind of story as done in old CRPGs, where people talk directly to you and the story points come from them; your characters are only participants insofar as they obtain a key item/kill a key monster.

There will be a remake of the first Et Od, called Et Od Untold: the Millennium Girl, that promises to combine the gameplay of IV with a deeper storyline, that players can progress with.
