I am having blurays burned of the despecialized editions as we speak...

The only reason I still have a large collection of VHS tapes is that they are either something that has not been released on DVD/Bluray or something that I found for cheap when the DVD is pricey. Then ofcourse there are some holdovers that I have had for a long time or were given to me by friends: like my two episode Transformer tapes I bought from Turtles for $23 a pop back in 1992, and my copy of Bruce vs Shaolin which was famous in my highschool for me showing clips of it on our video announcements - the tape itself we found in the tech lab under a file cabinet.

I do wish I could find a place to sell my Red Dwarf tapes. I bought 33 of the 36 tapes at a Goodwill several years ago and dont need them anymore since I have the DVDs.

I think there are a few movies that I prefer on VHS. I'm not saying it's a superior format, but it's fun for nostalgic purposes.

Some of my favorite VHS cassettes:
  • Friday
  • Return of the Living Dead
  • Flight of Dragons
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
A lot of these old movies were made on a low budget, and don't look great in DVD either. So why not watch them on VHS?

VCRs are still good to make recordings that you want to keep. And to play movies that were never released on DVD. I have a lot of WWF and WCW VHS in particular that never saw DVD releases.

And then in my case, I also have a large VHS collection that I'm not just gonna get rid of because I bought a DVD player. I have some of the best films from the 80s and 90s on VHS.

I don't think I've ever mentioned this, at least not in any detail, but my brother and I use to use a VCR and Mario Paint to make "movies" back in the day. You know the animation you can do in Mario Paint? We'd use that, along with some creativity, and the pause button on the VCR. We'd even mix in gameplay footage from other SNES games. It was good fun.

Try doing that with a DVD player!

Out of the blue, my in-laws ended up purchasing two VHS/DVD combo players for themselves @ Best Buy.

Thus I have inherited their old one. It isn't bad at all - only problem is there is no remote! Do they make universal remotes for these things?

I don't see why not. My guess is the same manufacturer codes as the separate DVD and VCR settings.

I picked several SEALED VHS tapes from Goodwill for $.70 each... might've just started an addiction.

I use a Sony combo unit that also plays CDs & Video CDs (yes, I have some VCDs lol). I have it running DVD/VCD via component & VHS via composite. Great player overall.

Update: Just found all 3 of the Indiana Jones movies for 99¢ each. I might've just started collecting another item....

Okay here is my combo unit:
Sony SLV-D100 DVD-VCR Combo
4:3 & 16:9 modes
Disc side: component, s video, & composite
Audio: Stereo, Digital Coaxial, Optical
VHS: composite (Hi-Fi stereo)

VHS looks clean & DVDs look amazing in 480p. Also notable it will run Video CDs (VCDs) via component. Of course, plays CDs as well.

Amazon page for specs:http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00006HCEF

Edit/update:

BTW, Amazon sellers are asking way too much for my unit, just wanted you guys to know the specs :)

My merger VHS collection below. Unfortunately, got rid of 95% of my tapes around 2004 due to space constraints & moving. TMNT & Scooby tapes are mine from my childhood. Others I found at Goodwill for between 70¢ - 90¢ each (Total Recall, Water World, & Son in Law were all still sealed lol). You can't beat getting the Indiana Jones trilogy for $3! I'll be slowly picking up VHS tapes if they're under a buck & something I want to have on hand.

... that Star Wars box is the official Video CD release of the trilogy if you want to talk about old formats :)
