Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I knew most of the safety information, but I didn't know how to adjust the pots. I have no plastic screwdrivers, so I'll keep clear for now.

I turned a 1950s CRT into an oscilloscope/music visualizer for a metal show once, but it didn't survive the night. Too bad. Pumping audio signals into the VSync was pretty cool...

I may just stick with this CRT. It looks awful, but it's good enough for light gun games and I'll use my LCD for everything else.

High voltage doesn't kill, high current does. You could potentially kill yourself with a car battery.

I'm glad for that. I once broke open the VFD OLED display of an old VCR and decided to touch the display while it was runing. Finger got burnt & smelled like a hot-dog and burnt hair. I've seen a car battery melt 1/8th of a combination wrench.
The old trick was to take the noise-eliminator capacitor of a car radio and short it out on the battery terminals while revving the engine a few times and then tell someone to hold it. If they touch the shell and the ground they'll crap their pants. I didn't touch both ends and everyone was dissapointed. Dallyman did. My dad's friends were jerks.

That is a beautiful stand! My 36" trinitron came with the matching stand, but it's a particle board beast.

The problem with the metal stand is that it only holds a single thing and has no protection from dust.
