I created a list for the Summer Challenge and it included Fire Emblem (GBA) and I figured why not start that too since I just picked up a ridiculously cheap DS Lite that makes GBA games look really good.......

well, I am through the tutorial stages and have gotten to the 1st side quest in FE and I am enjoying comparing the two. I don't know whether it was a good decision to

a) play both SRPG's at the same time or
b) start my Summer Challenge with a long game like FE!

I am still playing Shining Force 2 through emulation and it is great. I am just moving a little slower now I have started FE.

All I can say is I am hooked on both. Good stories and great mechanics. Loving it.

Played for a bit last night. Tried to wing it without reading the game instructions first and wow did I get my ass handed to me! Didn't even get past the first battle.

I'm gonna take some time tomorrow to sit down and read the instruction booklet - figure out what the hell I'm doing.

I assume that a good strategy in that first battle is to essentially grind some, then teleport out, return to the battle, then rinse and repeat until you start kicking ass? Makes sense to me - but by the time I figured that out I had to hit the sack.

I only played for about half an hour - think I'll just start a fresh save file when I start tomorrow.

And man is it gonna take me some time to get used to these controls. Everything feels so slippery and I ended up talking to every townsperson like 8 times by accident. I'm so used to the A-confirm/B-cancel SNES style control scheme.

You might want to start using the C-button (confirm) and B-button (cancel). Fortunately in 2, they made it so that you can talk to people without using the menus. (I've always hated having to use a menu to talk to NPCs, open doors, etc.) The A-button will always bring up the menu tree, though.

You shouldn't need to grind in the first battle, or even in the first several battles. The main trick is to try and lure enemies out one at a time. Most enemies tend to have a movement pattern of either holding still or only moving a couple squares until you get close enough that they can engage in a single move.

Headed to the north side of the continent. Well into the latter half of the game now.
